  • JOB SUMMARY
  • The OB Tech is responsible for both clerical and nursing care duties within the Family Birthing Center. Performs tasks related to patient care during labor and postpartum period of the Maternal Child units. Provides assistance during births, scrubs for csections and minor surgeries, performs secretarial duties in the Birth Center and functions as a Nursing Assistant. Floats between all units within the Family Birthing Center. Functions under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.
  • RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Essential Functions_
  • Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Covenant Health and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the hospital.
  • 1. Performs patient care duties and activities of nursing assistant and scrub tech as directed by Registered Nurse.
  • 2. Assists in transporting patients between departments.
  • 3. Maintains cleanliness and safe environment of labor and delivery rooms in the birthing center.
  • 4. Prepares labor and postpartum rooms for patient occupancy and assists with clean up.
  • 5. Sets up sterile equipment for deliveries and washes instruments and prepares them for sterilization.
  • 6. Assists and scrubs in the Operating Room for obstetric and gynecological procedures such as csections, etc.
  • 7. Performs daily clerical routine and data entry into EMR record such as admitting patients, patient billing, and collection of data for birth certificates and medical records.
  • PATIENT CARE/AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • The OB Scrub Technician works in specialty areas including L&D and nursery, involving newborn care and minor procedures. Possess' knowledge of procedures and process specific to patient population including age specific needs.
  • QUALIFICATION/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • Current certification on IDPH's Healthcare Worker Registry required. OR Tech certification preferred.
  • Previous Obstetric and/or Scrub Technician experience preferred.
  • Ability to perform function of both scrub tech and nursing assistant.
  • Basic computer skills involving order entry into EMR system.
  • Ability to interact effectively with others, ability to observe and communicate accurately.
  • Ability to respond effectively to stress.
  • Ability to organize and respond effectively to changing patient needs.
  • Ability to handle confidentiality appropriately.
  • Demonstrates a team focus approach to changing patient census and unit needs.
  • LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
  • Current certification on IDPH's Healthcare Worker Registry required.
  • Current CPR certification with the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.

  • Computer system access for the Nursing Division is assigned based on criteria as specified in Policy # , and on the minimum necessary as described in this job description. Approval for level of access is given by the system administrator (for Nursing Division this is Nursing Informatics) or the department that has ownership of system/module. See computer system Access Control policy.
  • ENVIRONMENT
  • Physical effort: Heavy, frequent lifting and supporting patients; pushing/pulling of carts, wheelchairs and other equipment.
  • Standing/walking for major portion of the shift.
  • Exposure to blood borne pathogens, disease and accidents.
  • Direct patient care role, highly visible and busy.
