The Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching near Munich is a world leader in the field of ground-based and space-based experimental astronomy.

The IT group supports and maintains the institute's IT infrastructure and central IT services.

Additionally, they develop scientific software and applications for ongoing research projects, as well as specific control software for detectors and satellites currently under construction.


The main research areas of the High Energy Group (HEG) include compact remnants of stars such as white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes, the evolution of supermassive black holes in the center of galaxies, and the formation of the largest structures in the universe.


To support the HE Group, which works with current and future X-ray telescopes (eROSITA/SRG and Athena), the IT group is currently seeking a highly motivated IT system administrator.


Key responsibilities include managing the IT infrastructure and Linux server landscape of the HEG, providing support for desktops, laptops, and software, onboarding and offboarding HEG employees, installing software for scientific purposes, performing backups and restorations, and contributing strengths and knowledge to cross-group tasks.

The role also involves managing institute-wide web services.

The ideal candidate will have a technical degree (Master/Bachelor/Diploma) or a completed vocational training with relevant professional experience. Scripting or programming skills (e.g. Python or similar) and experience with Infrastructure-as-Code frameworks (e.g. Ansible) are required. Strong knowledge of system administration
