We are seeking an experienced addition to our Journal editorial team.


The Associate Editor, Journals, plays a pivotal role alongside the in-house Editor in ensuring the smooth operation of Springer Publishing's academic and technical journals.

Acting as a liaison between societies, editorial boards, internal teams, and various stakeholders, this position ensures effective communication, timely publication, and overall efficiency and success of our list of new and existing journals.

Reporting to the Journals Publisher, the Associate Editor is an integral part of the journals' editorial department, collaborating closely with the production, marketing, advertising, and accounting departments.


Responsibilities

  • Work alongside the inhouse Journals Editor to jointly oversee editorial process from submission to final publication.
  • Serve as the first point of contact and liaison between societies, editorial boards, and authors, supporting the inhouse Journals Editor in this role.
  • Prioritize and promptly address the needs of societies and editorial boards throughout the publication process.
  • Communicate with EditorsinChief, Publishing Assistants, and Editorial Board members on the assessment of content for each issue, and planning and approval of the table of contents.
  • Work with the inhouse Journals Editor to help maintain uptodate schedule tracking and send alerts for potential delays.
  • Assist in managing membership lists and facilitating exchange of materials between societies and compositor and ensure accuracy and timeliness in the process.
  • Assist authors and sponsors with requests for open access and liaise with production and accounting to ensure orders are processed.
  • Maintain accurate digital displays of journal information and content. Coordinate with ISS and production teams as needed and communicate Masthead changes to production.
  • Support the onboarding and training of new editorial boards, ensuring seamless transition.
  • Perform periodic review of SPC journal web pages and dedicated journal websites for missing and broken links, outdated information, and routine content updates (e.g., editorial board updates, revisions in author guidelines, descriptive copy, etc.).
  • Collaborate with the Journals Editor to generate journal performance reports and presentations of metrics for editorial board meetings.
  • Collaborate with marketing and advertising teams to facilitate insertion orders and ensure accuracy of information about ads and placements.
  • Help plan journal promotions and bonus distributions at conferences.
  • Assist with coordination of eTOC alerts, nursing newsletter content, and distribution lists.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:


  • Three years of publishing experience with multiple academic and technical journals, handling manuscripts from submission to publication release.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Knowledge of academic peer review processes and experience with ScholarOne or similar submission and peer review systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience with journal guidelines (APA, AMA) and performance metrics including impact factor.
  • Knowledge of and experience with article workflow vs issue workflow.
  • Knowledge of and experience with production editing tools and tracking systems.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships and collaborate with diverse coworkers and volunteers, including professional communication with international researchers and professionals.
  • Superior project management skills and advanced writing and oral communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and proficient in time management.
  • Availability to flex work hours into evening when required
  • Able to travel to Princeton, NJ office and as required
