NATURE OF WORK:


Each of our PSAs work as both call takers and dispatchers with the responsibility for servicing two communities with their professional experience and skillsets, the City of Hyattsville, as well as the neighboring City of Mount Rainier.

Through a multitude of computerized, telephonic, and radio systems our PSAs are responsible for coordinating, monitoring, and controlling public safety resources and services; triaging inquiries to ensure their resolution; and collecting, evaluating, and disseminating information to other areas of the department for collaborative action, amongst their other multi-faceted responsibilities.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Receiving, identifying, and accurately evaluating emergency and routine calls for police services. Monitoring and maintaining the status of all police personnel and units as to location and availability.
  • Determining appropriate personnel and equipment to be dispatched using voice radio and computer aided dispatch system (CAD).
  • Using established policies and procedures and independent judgment to make accurate and rapid decisions in dispatching police resources.
  • Initiating, receiving, and interpreting information from various law enforcement and computerized databases.
  • Sending, receiving, and disseminating confidential information.
  • Operating police radio and multiline telephone systems.
  • Performing queries and entries into law enforcement networked computers (NCIC/MILES).
  • Effectively communicating and coordinating in a team environment with coworkers, other agencies, departments, and the public, exercising strong customer service and group dynamic skills.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • High School Graduate or GED completion

  • Demonstrated serviceoriented experience.
  • Excellent judgment and evaluation skills.
  • Ability to approach problems and complex issues with logic and reason.
  • Strong multitasking ability, with an understanding of effective triaging.
  • Effective technical skills, to include data entry.
  • Ability to exercise tact, patience, and courtesy in all contacts.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Experienced dispatchers are encouraged to apply.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is primarily sedentary and requires rotating shift work including nights, weekends, and holidays.
