What we want
The Research Assistant is responsible for supporting research activities under general supervision in the Wiener and Stranahan Dermatopathology Labs. Duties may include assisting in cell culture, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry experiments in addition to general laboratory maintenance duties. Basic knowledge of techniques commonly used in research are preferred, but not required.

Compensation will be $12.02/hr


Required Education:


  • Appropriate bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education:


  • Degree in biomedical science, biology, microbiology, genetics, biochemistry or other life science related field.

Preferred Experience:


  • Experience with the following lab techniques is preferred: immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, DNA and RNA extraction, conventional PCR, realtime PCR, cell culture, RNA sequencing and agarose gel electrophoresis.
  • Experience in cell culture, PCR, sequencing, immunohistochemistry, processing and staining of tissue.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Good communication and organization skills, ability to work independently, enthusiasm for learning new techniques, and high motivation are highly desired.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Knowledge in Dermatopathology, Veterinary Pathology or Veterinary Medicine.

Responsibilities:

Research Assistant: Performs routine laboratory tests including immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, conventional and real time PCR and synthesizes and interprets results. Performs antibody optimization and antigen retrieval, IHC/IFC, and ISH manually. Obtains skin samples from the pathology building or small animal hospital and performs work in cell culture (organoids and cell lines). Designs and troubleshoots protocols, procedures, and techniques. Assists a project leader with the development and implementation of research projects. Participates with others in the development of experiments; conducts experiments; analyzes and maintains detailed records of data and prepares written summaries of results for reports and manuscripts; utilizes computers to generate graphics and statistical displays.

Supervision of Student workers and graduate students: May train graduate students, and part-time workers in standardized research techniques and analytical procedures.

Organization/maintenance of lab supplies**:Assists in ensuring availability of proper laboratory supplies and procures supplies as necessary; performs and schedules maintenance on research equipment; may coordinate the use of research equipment and other resources; may maintain and update records of expenditures on project accounts. Performs other duties as assigned.
