    Position Overview
    The Lopez Island School District is seeking a highly qualified leader.

    The successful candidate will be the educational leader for a small, rural K-12 school district with 200-plus students and will be expected to handle multiple responsibilities and wear many hats.

    The position requires a person skilled in team building, collaboration and community outreach. The Lopez Community has a strong commitment to environmental and humanitarian concerns.

    We hope to continue growing in our use of the most current standards of education and high quality student experiences layed out in our recently adopted Strategic Plan.

    Lopez School District is the largest employer on the island, and our facilities are used by many of our local organizations for meetings and activities.

    The Lopez Island Community cares deeply about our school and the successful candidate will have the ability to continue to build on that community support.

    The District is looking for an individual who will help the Board evaluate the current budget and organizational structure and explore possible changes designed to increase effectiveness and reduce costs.

    The Board wishes to have the successful candidate assume the responsibilities of the position as soon as possible.
    We are searching for a .5 Superintendent.

    We will also accept applications for those wishing to fill the role on an interim basis for the Spring 2024 Semester.

    Candidate Qualifications

    • Masters Degree
    • Experience in a small, community oriented K-12 school environment
    highly desired

    • Successful elementary and/or secondary teaching experience highly
    desired

    • Successful leadership experience in educational administration highly desired
    • Experience in fiscal management and budget development
    • Experience in Labor Relations and working with Union Leadership
    • Strong leadership skills in promoting a high level of trust and a collaborative team
    environment

    • Commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
    • Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral
    • Familiarity with the laws, rules and regulations governing the operation of public schools
    in the State of Washington highly desired

    • Residence within the district highly desirable
    Our Community:

    Lopez Island is the third largest of the San Juan Islands and an unincorporated town in San Juan County, Washington , United States .

    Lopez Island is 29.81 square miles in land area.

    The 2020 census population was 3,156; though the population swells in the summer, as second homes, rental houses, and campsites fill up.

    It takes ingenuity and effort to live full time on an island. The ferry system is our only "highway" to and from the mainland. Occupations are varied – farming, fishing, teaching, construction, telecommuting, art, crafts, tourism, and a variety of small businesses.
    Many locals have more than one job and we consider our residents to be
    the heart and soul of our community.
