Purpose:


The role of the Director of Student Services at Atonement Lutheran School is to implement and maintain the curricular and instructional needs of students who are severely behind their current grade level.

The Director of Student Services will also support the classroom teachers who have academically struggling students and to establish educational-action plans for these students.


Responsibilities:


  • Ensure that the school follows all state and federal regulations relative to the identification, placement, and program development for special education students.
  • Provide leadership for assuring the development of effective and appropriate special education programs, services, and curriculum
  • Work with the school administration to develop and manage budgets for special education programs, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively to meet the needs of students.
  • Represent the school in dealing with outside agencies and organizations concerned with special education
  • Oversee the implementation of individualized education plans for special education students and ensure that they are in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Facilitates communication and mediation with parents and advocates regarding the delivery of special education services
  • Work closely with educational specialists, such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, and behavioral specialists, to ensure that students receive comprehensive support services as outlined in their IEPs.
  • Coordinates the development and maintenance of student special education records and files
  • Develops and coordinates development of various data reports requested by both state and federal agencies
  • Manages and leads the preparation and review of reports generated for state funding through the Special Needs Scholarship Program.
  • Prepares and leads staff development sessions for special education personnel
  • Seeks approval for special education requests for supplies, materials, and equipment
  • Coordinates and leads the instructional program for special education services
  • Develop mechanisms to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of special education programs, services, and curriculum, making adjustments as needed to improve outcomes for students.
  • Coordinates with the principal for recruiting, hiring and evaluating special education teachers
  • Provide leadership in developing and implementing crisis intervention plans for special education students, ensuring their safety and wellbeing during emergencies or challenging situations.
  • Organize and facilitate professional development opportunities for general education teachers to support the inclusion of special needs students in mainstream classrooms.
  • Observe and provide feedback to special education teachers
  • Stay abreast of best practices and emerging trends in special education, incorporating new methodologies and technologies to enhance student learning experiences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal

Requirements:


  • WELS ministry certification or the willingness to pursue ministry certification.
  • Master's Degree in special education, or related field, or willingness to pursue a Masters.
  • Minimum of five years of experience as an instructional teacher, either within a classroom or as a special education teacher, with demonstrated high performance.
  • Holds or is willing to pursue state certification.
  • Drive to improve the minds and lives of students in and out of the classroom
  • Agreement and alignment with Atonement's core beliefs and educational philosophy
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and strong interpersonal skills with students, parents, colleagues, and community members
  • Understanding of the nuances of urban school environments and school culture
  • Must be an active member, in good standing, of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.
