Are you passionate about ensuring safety in excavation practices and protecting underground infrastructure? Do you have a keen eye for detail and enjoy conducting thorough investigations? If so, we have the perfect job for you


As an Investigator with the Underground Safety Board, you'll play a crucial role in enforcing the provisions of the Dig Safe Act of 2016 and promoting safe excavation practices across California.

Under the guidance of our dedicated team, you'll have the opportunity to make a real impact by:


  • Conducting accident investigations involving excavationrelated damages to underground infrastructure.
  • Developing comprehensive reports consistent with our enforcement philosophy.
  • Performing audits to analyze "call before you dig" data and ensure compliance.
  • Traveling to accident locations and outreach events throughout a large geographic area.
  • Acting as an ambassador for the Board, engaging in education and outreach activities.
Training and Development Assignments may be considered.

Staff Services Analyst will also be considered for recruitment purposes.

Occasional travel may be required. Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.

This position is designated under the Conflict of Interest Code.

The position is responsible for making or participating in the making of governmental decisions that may potentially have a material effect on personal financial interests.

The appointee is required to complete Form.

Working Conditions

  • Must be willing to work irregular hours, nights, and/or weekends to meet the Department's business needs.
  • Must be able to work outside in a range of weather conditions
  • Must be able to work in a construction zone environment
  • Stooping, bending, squatting, reaching, and walking long distances.
  • Occasion travel to include evenings, overnight, weekends or several days at a time. Travel to inspection points
may include driving over 100 miles on short notice and unusual hours.
