    Speech Language Pathologist - Per Diem/PRN

    Location: Chicago, IL

    Hospital: RUSH University Medical Center

    Department: Speech-Language Pathology

    Work Type: Restricted Part Time (Total FTE less than 0.5)

    Shift: Shift 1

    Work Schedule: 8 Hr (7:30:00 AM - 4:00:00 PM)


    Summary:
    The principal responsibilities for this position are related to providing clinical services. The individual will also assist with clinical projects.

    Assesses children, teens and young adults with communication problems and dysphagia typically of neurogenic origin, develops a treatment program in consultation with other psychologists, physicians and other professionals, and modifies speech language pathology treatment in accordance with patient progress.

    Required Job Qualifications:

    • Master's level degree from an ASHA accredited university.
    • Holds or is eligible for Illinois licensure in Speech Language Pathology.
    • Current Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
    • Ability to evaluate and diagnose speech, language and cognitive-communication disorders.
    • Ability to treat speech, language and cognitive-communication disorders in school-aged children.
    • Three years post-Fellow experience.
    • Intermediate to advanced level of clinical skills, with advanced competence in specialty areas.
    • Possess excellent problem solving skills and analytic ability to appropriately diagnose clients' problems and develop rehabilitation plans.
    • Ability to approach each situation with an open mind and positive attitude; ability to work and interact well with others so that customer service remains a priority.
    • Capable of handling a busy, varying caseload; possess good organizational skills.

    Preferred Job Qualifications:

    • Clinical Specialty Recognition by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Or certification in neurological communication disorders by the Academy of Neurological Communication Disorders and Sciences.
    • Experience working in schools or with children.
    • Hospital-based experience.

    Responsibilities:

    • Effectively administers and interprets diagnostic testing for outpatients, related to speech pathology.
    • Evaluates patient's speech, language and swallowing abilities in order to formulate and conduct treatment plan designed to improve communicative efficiency of patients with communication problems.
    • Establishes patient treatment goals tailored to each patient's needs and capabilities.
    • Demonstrates competency in understanding the growth and development of child, adolescent, and young adult patients as measured by specific performance standards and as described by department policies and procedures. Demonstrates the ability to interpret growth and development related information to assure patient needs are met.
    • Reviews patient's chart, interviews patient/family and consults with physicians, audiologists and other relevant clinical professionals in order to evaluate patient condition according to standard procedures.
    • Counsels patients, family members/significant others regarding communication deficits and instructs them in proper management techniques.
    • Monitors patient progress, re-establishes goals and revises treatment plan as necessary. Alerts psychologists and physicians to changes in patient's condition.
    • Maintains clinical records including writing diagnostic reports, progress reports, discharge summaries, re-evaluations and rechecks, summarizing family and professional contact and logging daily statistics and other clinical data.
    • Works closely with specialists from other disciplines to provide the best possible care for even the most challenging cases.
    • Keeps informed of developments in the field in order to maintain and enhance professional expertise.
    • Adheres to the Code of Ethics established by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association.
    • May contribute to the profession through organizational activities, education, research and/or publications.
