    ContinuousDescription This is a non-exempt position which is experienced Journeyman or Master level mechanic work, responsible for the maintenance and repair of a variety of large trucks, heavy equipment and diesel repairs.

    Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

    Examples of Duties Diagnoses defects, make repairs and performs minor and major work on a variety of heavy and light equipment.

    Performs preventative maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment. Operates various types of equipment, machinery, precision instruments and specialized tools and devices.

    Performs all types of repair work on heavy equipment including, but not limited to, relining brakes, removing transmissions, repairing electrical systems, rebuilding engines, changing and balancing tires, repairing and replacing air conditioning units, and repairing and replacing exhaust systems.

    Maintains simple records of work performed. Maintains a clean and safe working environment at all times. This position does not have final procurement authority. Performs related work as required and as directed.

    Typical Qualifications Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices and procedures of the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment and diesel engines.

    Thorough knowledge and experience in diagnosing and repairing Front Loaders, Backhoes, Skid Steer loaders and other heavy equipment. Thorough knowledge and experience in diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electronically controlled diesel engines.

    Thorough knowledge and experience in diagnosing and repairing power steering, transmissions, final drives, Power Take Off Units (PTO), power, hydraulic and air brakes.

    Ability to troubleshoot, adjust, replace, repair and rewire electrical systems and components, such as ignitions, signals, lights and electrical controls, including computer-controlled components.

    Some fabrication and welding skills would be preferred. Considerable knowledge and experience in diesel repair and large truck repairs. Considerable knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel fueled internal combustion engines. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of proper use of safety practices. Considerable knowledge of and skill in the use of tools, equipment and machinery used in automotive repair.

    Considerable knowledge and skill in the use of a variety of shop tools such as drills, welding equipment and other tools necessary for the proper performance of work.

    Knowledge of and the ability to operate various types of precision computer diagnostic equipment. Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance functions of a wide variety of automotive and related equipment. Knowledge of and the ability to perform repairs on air conditioning and new electrical systems. Ability to maintain legible records of work performed and parts used.

    Ability to perform preventive maintenance on all fleet equipment; oil change, tuning, brakes, cooling, electrical and all other phases of automotive repair.

    Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments correctly. Ability to adhere to tight schedules and still maintain work quality. Ability to supply personally owned tools in order to perform job function. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other City employees. Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license.

    DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING Journeyman or Master level experience in the field of automotive mechanics, or graduation from an approved course in the trade; completion of a standard high school or vocational school; Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) certification desirable; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills may be considered.

    Work Environment This is a designated "Recovery" classification in the City's Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies.

    Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
    Probationary PeriodAll new employees serve a one (1) year probationary period from date of hire.
    Working HoursMost full-time employees work 40 hours per week unless otherwise indicated.
    Hours of Operation Monday through Friday (except City Holidays) 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM unless otherwise noted.

    Pay CheckPay checks are issued bi-weekly every other Friday; direct deposit of paycheck required to any banking institution is mandatory.

    Insurance CoverageLife and Accidental Death and DismembermentClosest thousand to amount of Annual Salary (policy paid for by the City) up to $50,000.Hospitalization, Major Medical, Dental and VisionThe Employee pays a portion of the cost for themselves and for dependent coverage at a rate established by Administration.


    Dependent Coverage:

    spouses are eligible only if they do not have entitlement to participate in another employer's group medical plan or Medicare.

    • Mandatory contribution is 4% of base pay.

    Normal Retirement Date:
    Age 59 and completion of 10 years of credited service.
    HolidaysThe City of Plantation observes eleven (12) paid holidays per year as declared by the City Council each year.
    Personal DayAll full-time employees will be given the benefit of one (1) personal day per calendar year. Cannot be used until employed six (6) months; can not be carried over from one year to the next.
    Sick Leave13 days per year. Accrues 4 hours at end of each bi-weekly pay period. Maximum accrual is 480 hours.

    An employee is not entitled to use annual leave until employed 6 months.
