EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I

Overview
An Equipment Operator I in the Sewers Department operates several types of automotive equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks in support of Federal MS4 stormwater permit activities and BMP maintenance.. Incumbents may service and make minor mechanical repairs. In addition, this position is critical to the support of emergency and special events, such as flooding and snow events. Assignments are outlined in detail by a supervisor, standard procedures are followed, and work is inspected periodically for safety and economy of operation.

Opportunity

Operates vehicles and equipment in support of Federal MS4 stormwater permit activities;

Operates a dump truck in connection with transportation of sand, stone, asphalt, gravel and other supplies;

Operates a light truck in carrying tools, equipment, and other supplies;

Keeps equipment clean, makes minor repairs and reports any malfunctions to equipment o fleet management shop;

Responds to citizens inquiries regarding Public Works Services;

Responds to emergency or special events activity as needed;

Leads a small crew under direct supervision from a Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent;

Operates a snowplow with a salt spreader, also shovels snow when not operating heavy trucks;

Performs repairs or replacement to storm sewer main piping, fittings and valves;

Performs replacement or repairs to storm sewer manholes;

Performs replacements or repairs sewer manholes;

Performs investigations and repairs to sink holes;

Operates flusher truck and/or vactor truck to maintain storm sewer mains;

Performs related work as required.About the Department

Minimum & Additional Requirements

To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED; one (1) year of experience in the operation of maintenance and/or construction equipment; good knowledge of departmental operations and procedures; some vocational training as related to construction/maintenance field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather; must have a valid Commercial Driver's license.
