ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Dana Point is seeking hard-working and enthusiastic students who are pursuing a degree in the Civil Engineering field to fill the position of Public Works Intern. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience working in the Public Works & Engineering Department, as well as learn about municipal government functions and tasks related to the program area. This is an hourly, part-time position, limited to no more than 19 hours per week.

There is currently one (1) vacancy available in this classification. This is a Continuous Recruitment that is subject to close once a sufficient number of qualified applications are received.

DEFINITION:

Under immediate supervision perform a variety of entry level or semi-skilled tasks in support of the City's Department of Public Works and Engineering Services. Conduct research; compile and analyze data; perform routine administrative and/or technical support tasks. Incumbent is assigned to perform projects which both help the City achieve its objectives and provide on-the-job exposure to a student or recent college graduate pursuing a career in the engineering or a related field.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

This classification is a part-time position used for training purposes in the field of engineering or a related field and in the specific operation of City departments. This position is non-exempt under FLSA standards.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

1. Perform a variety of Civil Engineering related tasks in support of the Department of Public Works and Engineering Services.

2. Perform field investigations, take photos, and prepare reports and presentations for the assigned area of responsibility. Assist with surveying City property.

3. Prepare AutoCAD drawings and exhibits from engineering sketches, survey field notes, and other data for use in the design and construction of a variety of public works projects.

4. Maintain and update a variety of records including tracking lists, maps and records including City street maps, utility system maps, lot and block maps, charts and blueprints as requested.

5. Create, organize and maintain computer data bases and plan check and logging systems for various plans, reports, projects, jobs, and related documents.

6. Assist in inspecting Public Works construction projects.

7. Prepare a variety of illustrations, certificates, and visual aids for various meetings and presentations.

8. Assist in performing traffic studies.

9. Conduct research and special projects.

10. Document facility infrastructure and Land Surveyors Act conditions.

11. Respond to complaints and requests for information.

12. Prepare map and graphic presentations.

13. Assist in developing contracts.

14. Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Basic office procedures and customer service skills. Basic research methods and techniques. Understand and follow oral and written instructions and sketches. Modern office methods, practices, and procedures. Computer software programs including AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook. Effectively utilize a variety of computer, communication, GIS, and design programs and software. Safe work practices and procedures.

Ability to:

Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing for differing audiences. Independently prepare correspondence and memoranda. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Operate a motor vehicle safely.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

The following combination of education and experience is most typically likely to provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities: Equivalent to high school graduation, continuing; college student majoring in civil engineering with at least one year shown in program.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Position requires the ability to perform occasional light lifting and carrying; occasional standing and walking; and sitting for prolonged periods of time. Occasional hand use and finger dexterity needed to use computer keyboard and operate standard office equipment; occasional pushing, pulling, grasping, and reaching may also be required. Good hearing is required when communicating on the telephone or in person.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment described herein is representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential function of this job. Primarily office environment with controlled temperature conditions and exposure to environmental factors and hazardous physical substances are minimal and pose little to no risk of injury. Occasional driving to meetings and/or events may be required.

HEALTH BENEFITS - This position is not eligible for health or disability benefits. An Employee Fitness Center, including shower facilities, is located onsite at City Hall and is available 24/7 for use by employees.
SICK LEAVE - The Healthy Families Healthy Workplace Act provides part-time employees with up to 40 hours of paid sick leave per year that may be used beginning on the employee's 90th day of employment, provided the employee has worked 30 calendar days in the calendar year.
RETIREMENT - The City does not participate in social security. In lieu of social security, the City contributes an additional 7.5% of the employee's earnings to a 457 deferred compensation account on the employee's behalf.
EDUCATION REIMBURSEMENT - Year-round part-time employees who have completed six months of continuous employment with the City may be eligible for reimbursement for approved education expenses, up to a fiscal year maximum of 25% of the cost of a full-time, in-state course work at a California State University.
