This role resides within the Office of Translational Research, Innovation, and Technology Transfer (OTR) and reports to the OTR Director.

OTR is responsible for facilitating the translational research efforts of Albany Med faculty, clinicians, researchers, and students; supporting and encouraging the growth of the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem; and overseeing technology transfer for Albany Med Health System (AMHS).


The Innovation Project Manager is a critical member of the OTR team responsible for leading and managing the protection and commercialization of AMHS's most exciting intellectual property and for promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in support of one of AMHS's strategic pillars: Translational Research.


Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Serve as the key intermediary between groundbreaking research and the marketplace, by swiftly translating highly complex ideas into simple, businessoriented language all while collaborating with a dedicated and passionate team.
  • Serve as an ambassador with external partners, including but not limited to: regional academic institutions and outside economic development partners. Where necessary, work to adapt these relationships into a good strategic fit for the future of the OTR and AMHS.
  • Support tech transfer throughout invention disclosure, development, and commercialization processes including preforming patentability searches, assessing market potential, assisting in business model canvas development, and identifying strategic partners.
  • In partnership with the OTR Director, oversee the implementation and delivery of OTR educational programming to include but not limited to Clinical Immersion, OTR Academy (aka Bio innovation Bootcamp), Lunch and Learns, and Regional Innovation Seminars.
  • Match AMHSled projects with external partners to help drive development, including potential industry and/or academic partners.
  • Mentor AMC medical, graduate students, and regional undergraduate engineering students in entrepreneurship through pitch presentations, panel discussions, project partnering, and educational programming.
  • Proactively scout for inventions and interact with faculty, researchers, clinicians, and students.
  • Serve as a key intermediary between inventors and IP lawyers, business and marketing experts, product developers, and regulatory specialists.
  • Participate in technical and market due diligence for potential ideas and share insights on their feasibility and scalability.
  • Maintain and improve social media/marketing programs and other internal databases.
  • Identify, coauthor, and manage state, federal, and private grant opportunities for OTR activities and programs.

Eduation:

  • BS in Engineering and/or the Sciences. Advanced Degree preferred in Science, Engineering, Business, Medicine, or Law.

Paramount to the success of this individual and OTR to convey a positive attitude and have the ability to manage and anticipate the needs of a diverse community of professionals.
  • Expertise in managing the commercialization process from ideation through market launch.
  • Experience in creating and collaborating in strategic relationships particularly with other academic institutions, including creation, implementation, and/or management of educational programs and courses around bio innovation and/or translational research.
  • Related experience in all or some of the following: intellectual property types and strategies, business model canvas development, customer discovery, formation of a company and various corporate structures, FDA regulatory process, IRB approvals and clinical trial process, fundraising for startups, team and board recruitment, commercialization, pitch deck development, successful pitch delivery, and grant funding opportunities.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Expertise with MS Office Suite, mail and label merges, and browsers.
Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
