Incumbent serves as Environmental Health Specialist I for the Wabash County Health Department, responsible for investigation environmental complaints, conducting on-site inspections, and enforcing federal, state, and local public health and environmental protection laws, rules, and regulations.


Duties:


  • Investigate housing/nuisance/sewage complaints in a time frame reflecting the urgency of the complaint and in accordance with 410 IAC 68.
  • Assist in plan review, issue construction permits, and conduct inspections of onsite sewage systems within the timeframes listed in state statute.
  • Engage in the inspection and survey of public buildings under IC
  • Assist in inspections on all retail food establishments timely and professionally, such as new facility plan reviews, routine inspections, followup inspections, and foodborne illness complaints.
  • Be proficient in riskbased inspection, centered on training provided by IDOH and access to continuing education on riskbased inspection.
  • Inspects homes for compliance with Unfit for Human Habitation rules and regulations and orders dwellings condemned and occupants to vacate when necessary.
  • Public records requests in accordance with FOIA.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed files of all complaints, inspections, and related documents.
  • Completes quarterly board reports for local Board of Health.
  • This position reports directly to the Director of Environmental Health.
  • Other prescribed duties by Director of Environmental Health, Administrative Director, and Health Officer.

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Combination of training, education, or experience in environmental inspections. Including but not limited to retail food establishments, septic, and sanitary housing.
  • Ability to obtain Certified Food Protection Manager certification within six months of employment.
  • Ability to obtain Presby and ATL certifications within three months of employment.
  • Ability to read thermometers, temperature gauges.
  • Ability to us computer and printer equipment.
  • Ability to use fax machine.
  • Ability to use copy machine.
  • Must have valid driver's license.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:


Incumbent performs duties in a standard office environment and in the field, including standing/walking at will, walking on uneven terrain, working in extreme temperatures and inclement weather, lifting/carrying objects weighing under 25 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, crouching/kneeling, bending, reaching, driving, close/far vision, color/depth perception, hearing sounds/communication, and handling/grasping/fingering objects.

Incumbent works with or near cleaning/sanitizing chemicals and their fumes and odors, in a noisy environment, and in confined areas.

Incumbent may be exposed to irate/hostile individuals and have to respond to situations involving potential physical harm to self and others.


Incumbent regularly works weekend hours, occasionally works extended and/or evening hours, and travels out of town, sometimes overnight, for conferences and training seminars.

Incumbent serves on 24-hour call and responds to emergencies from off-duty status.


Pay:
$46,325.00 per year
