Communication Officer - Policy, Advocacy and Communication

Vital develops and oversees programs to address leading causes of morbidity and mortality, providing expertise in project implementation and management, strategic communication, epidemiology and surveillance, and other core public health capacities.

road safety, food policy, tobacco control, and activities to strengthen public health data systems and the use of public health data to guide policy and decision-making.

- and middle-income countries and cities in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific.

Job Purpose:

The Policy Advocacy and Communication division is seeking a talented and driven Communication Officer to join our dynamic team.

Each year, our team rolls out dozens of engaging and effective communications campaigns globally and within ten of the world's largest targeted media markets.

From Instagram influencer campaigns to television and local radio, our rigorous approach to developing data-driven campaigns is helping millions of people improve their health and building support for important policy changes, and winning awards to boot.

In this role, you will play a crucial part in supporting the staff in developing strategic communication plans tied to the tobacco control goals of individual markets, assist our leadership in documenting our success to funders and external audiences, and provide additional communications support in other public health areas as required.

This role provides opportunities to bring your communication skills, project management expertise and collaborative spirit to the work we do in countries across the globe.

The job also requires some operational and administrative work to support the smooth running of the program.


This is a full-time position based in our New York office, where a hybrid, 2-day-per-week office schedule is in place.

We offer highly competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits. The salary range for this position is $64,000 to $72,000 USD.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Program Support (80%) _
  • Work closely with the SVP, other division leaders and an international team to support communication efforts that will support new tobacco control policies, help people quit smoking, and call out the policy interference efforts by the tobacco industry.
  • Support teams in China, Indonesia, Brazil and seven other countries on developing communication campaigns.
  • Attend meetings and events, taking notes to synthesize key action items, followup and tracking needed for progress and completion.
  • Contribute to the production of documents in support of global program goals and priorities, including reports on Vital activities for donors.
  • Contribute to media content creation and be familiar with social channels such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn.
  • Administrative Support (20%) _
  • Handle administrative issues as needed related to the tobacco control communication work.
  • Assist with coordination of travel to conferences and meetings.
  • Schedule calls and meetings for projects and country programs.

Skills and Abilities:


  • Strategic communication experience and interest (e.g. media/public relations, content creation, marketing campaigns).
  • Exceptional attention to detail and being responsive.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to successfully manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills; proficient user of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of Monday, Microsoft Teams, or similar collaboration and project management platforms.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, particularly with multicultural, multiregional contexts.
  • Excellent English, proficiency in another language preferre
