Departmental Overview


The College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic, innovative new college at UC Berkeley that represents a once-in-a-generation transformation.

The College brings together faculty, researchers, staff and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefining the
research university for the digital age.


Core to the College Is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity-and building the capacity to respond to these challenges.

CDSS was created to meet the opportunities and demands of a world where data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence inform practice and policy in virtually every arena.


The College connects the Data Science Undergraduate Studies program, Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences, Department of Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Computational Precision Heath, and the Center for Computational Biology.

The College is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based undergraduate programs in data science, computing, statistics and other interdisciplinary programs, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year.


The Director of Facilities and Capital Projects reports directly to the Assistant Dean of Administration and Finance of the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society and is responsible for the coordination, planning and implementation of all facilities and capital projects for the Gateway Building and other locations as assigned.

The incumbent will represent the Dean's interests and those of the research community at large as they relate to campus wide initiatives involving facilities and capital projects.

This individual identifies objectives, manages projects involving very significant human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with an extremely high degree of autonomy.

The Director must be innovative, entrepreneurial and knowledgeable about research laboratory functions and complex facility infrastructure.

At the same time, the incumbent must be an effective communicator and collaborator with demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse academic, research and community stakeholders.

The Director is also responsible for facility development, building safety, hazardous materials, waste oversight and space allocation.

The Director coordinates these activities with other senior faculty leadership and senior staff including those responsible for budget, fundraising and other space related matters.

Additionally, the Director works closely with other campus units, including Environment Health & Safety, Capital Projects, Space Management and Capital Programs, Facilities Services and UC Police Department, to ensure facilities are constructed, maintained and operated in compliance with Federal, State, Local and University policies, regulations and codes.
