Position Overview:


  • This role proactively identifies potential clinical risks and safety issues that could impact patients, caregivers, stakeholders, and medical staff. Through analysis of clinical risk management data, the position contributes to performance improvement initiatives, patient safety programs, and the development of educational resources. Additionally, it supports the organization's compliance with regulatory requirements, all in pursuit of promoting patient safety and safeguarding organizational assets.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Assess potential risks and hazards within the healthcare environment, ranging from medical errors to workplace safety concerns.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to mitigate identified risks, ensure compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Provide training and education to healthcare staff on risk management strategies, safety protocols and best practices to prevent accidents and errors.
  • Oversee the reporting and investigation of incidents such as patient falls, medication errors, medical equipment malfunction, or workplace injuries, analyzing root causes and implementing corrective measures to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of safety programs like the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) to ensure compliance with Cal/OSHA and OSHA regulations. This includes conducting hazard assessments, establishing corrective actions, providing safety training, and maintaining program documentation.
  • They monitor compliance with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards related to healthcare safety and risk management, such as those set by organizations like CARF.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and minimize risks associated with healthcare delivery.
  • Facilitate communication with patients and their families regarding safety concerns, complaints, or adverse events, ensuring transparency and appropriate followup.
  • Develop and implement plans for emergency preparedness and response, including drills and training exercises to ensure readiness for various scenarios such as natural disasters, etc.
  • Collect and analyze data related to safety incidents, near misses, and quality metrics, generating reports to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams within the organization as well as external stakeholders such as insurers, legal counsel, and regulatory agencies to address safety and risk management issues effectively.

Qualifications:


EDUCATION**:

  • A bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, nursing, public health, business administration, or a related field (2+ years of experience may substitute).
  • Healthcare risk management certification (CPHRM, CPPS, or CHSP).

Requirements:


  • Previous experience in healthcare administration, risk management, patient safety, quality improvement, or related field required.
  • A strong understanding of healthcare regulations and accreditation standards relevant to risk management and patient safety, such as those established by CMS, OSHA, etc.
  • The ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data related to safety incidents, near misses, quality metrics, and regulatory requirements is essential for identifying trends, assessing risks, and implementing effective risk management strategies.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with staff, patients, families, and external stakeholders, as well as preparing reports, delivering presentations, and facilitating training sessions.
  • Must be a skilled analytical person, capable of identifying root causes of safety incidents, developing, and implementing corrective actions, and addressing complex challenges related to patient care and safety.
  • Incumbents must possess a keen attention to detail to ensure thoroughness in incident reporting, investigation, documentation, and implementation of risk mitigation strategies.
