General Description
Performs highly advanced informational and communications work as the agency's Communications Officer.

Work involves comprehensive planning, preparation, and coordination of agency communications and dissemination of public information concerning the functions of the agency to external customers, including the citizens of Texas, licensees of the Board, media and other entities.

Works under the direction of the Governmental Affairs & Communications Director with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities
50% Media Relations and Public Information.

Maintains close liaison with the media and disseminates information of public interest regarding agency and Board activities, and other related functions.

Coordinates media information requests and facilitates media interviews and visits in accordance with established agency policy. Conducts interviews and researches various sources to obtain information to satisfy media requests. Responds to inquiries from the public, agency licensees, and other stakeholders regarding agency programs and information. Manages agency social media presence. May review agency forms, reports, and other printed materials for clarity, accuracy, design, and consistency of agency message. Maintains policies and procedures and performs related tasks as needed.

45% Writing and Publications. Prepares, edits, and distributes news and informational releases. Writes, edits, and coordinates distribution of agency publications including newsletters, reports, and other printed materials.

Conducts interviews and researches various sources to obtain information to satisfy the completeness and accuracy of the content of published products.

Maintains policies and procedures and performs related tasks as needed.

5% Ancillary Department Support. Performs related work as assigned, including assisting with maintenance of the agency's website.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to research, prepare, and direct information effectively.
  • Ability to timely and effectively communicate with many different groups of customers, both internal and external.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing, clearly and accurately, complex and/or technical information.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Experience using virtual meeting platforms.
  • Experience using social media, specifically Facebook.
  • Experience using Content Management Systems (CMS) to update websites.

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor's degree from accredited 4year college or university required. Degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in journalism, public relations
