Internship Title:
Optical Analysis of Meteorological Satellite Imager In-Orbit Acquisitions in Wells Branch, TX

Satellite optical sensors and their processing chains are designed to meet specific optical performance requirements.

These include the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), which measures focus, and stray light, which is unintended light in the optical design.

Pre-launch performance is determined through a combination of simulations and measurements. It is important to confirm these estimates once the satellite is in orbit, as they may change over time.

This can be achieved through processing and analysis of various in-orbit acquisitions, such as images of Earth, deep space, and the moon.

The internship will involve supporting the estimation of in-orbit performance for several missions and optimizing ground processing to achieve Level-1 performance.

The intern will have the opportunity to learn about the specifications and assessment of key optical instrument performance, and will work closely with a team of instrument and calibration experts.

They will also participate in the exciting activities of the MTG-I1 FCI commissioning in 2023.

In-orbit testing and monitoring are crucial for every mission, and the intern will also gain exposure to processing satellite measurements into radiance products using both prototype and operational processors.

Duties:

The main tasks of the internship will include:

  • Becoming familiar with the MTF metric, in-field/out-of-field stray light artifacts, and methods for measuring them.
  • Familiarizing oneself with the EUMETSAT technical
