Examples of Duties:


  • Plan and coordinate work and ensure that work and safety rules, OSHA/IDOL, and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) regulations are followed.
  • Operate, inspect, maintain, repair, and build components of the supply pumping and storage system, including chemical handling, pumping equipment, electrical, and building maintenance
  • Operate, inspect, maintain and repair the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA).
  • Submit reports, order materials, and coordinate activities with other divisions.
  • Investigate service concerns and interact directly with utility customers and the public.
  • Oversee and inspect new construction including contracted work to improve the water distribution and sewer collection systems.
  • Required to work scheduled overtime for weekend and holiday well checks.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as water main breaks, computer failure, sewer flooding, etc.
  • Support other City departments/divisions in the abatement of emergency situations, such as snow and ice control.
  • Utilize a variety of equipment and tools, such as sewer jet, vacuum trucks, TV inspection units, excavator, backhoe, end loader, bobcat, hydro stop, tapping machine, shovels, wrenches, power saws, jackhammers, trenching equipment, and other related items.

Qualifications:


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years of experience in water distribution and sewer collections systems, public works and/or construction industry and one year of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of water supply, pumping, storage and distribution systems maintenance and repair, procedures, and techniques, including knowledge of Ion Exchange, HMO Filtration, Iron Removal, and Chemical Addition.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to interact with coworkers and the public.
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License or acquire within six months of hire (in house training available).
  • Ability to work under varying environmental conditions, including working in confined spaces and lift up to 80 lbs.
  • Respond to emergencies 24/7, reporting no later than 60 minutes of the callin.
  • Background check, physical, functional capacity evaluation, and drug screen.

Supplemental Information:

Pay range is per the Teamster's Collective Bargaining Agreement (Download PDF reader) with starting pay commensurate with experience.
