JOB TITLE:
Athletic Trainer


GOVERNMENT AGENCY & LOCATION:
United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA)

New London, Connecticut


POSITION INFORMATION:

This will be a Full-time, Temporary position to fill in at the United States Coast Guard Academy for approximately 12 weeks while our current Athletic Trainer is on Leave of Absence.

The United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) is one of four Armed Forces Academies of the United States.

The Academy's four-year college-level training and education fulfills mission needs by providing commissioned officers for the United States Coast Guard (USCG).

USCGA provides a rigorous undergraduate program, from which cadets graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as an Ensign in the USCG.

USCGA is located in New London, CT.

USCGA supports an NCAA Division III athletic program that includes 25 sports and 4 four-chartered clubs with over 600 student-athletes.

USCGA competes in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conferences.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Athletic Trainers support the USCGA's Health and Physical Education (HPE) curriculum, varsity teams, and club sports
  • Athletic Trainers will provide a full range of services including:
  • Performing injury prevention and mitigation
  • Rehabilitation services
  • Athletic performance optimization for cadets during training
  • HPE programming
  • Onsite and offsite competitions and practice events
  • Perform diagnostic examinations and deliver treatments to cadet patients who have suffered an injury or with any condition that is limiting athletic performance
  • Develop comprehensive treatment plans when indicated to include preventive services and mandated medical followup instructions
  • Prepare timely treatment records and reports documenting procedures performed and care provided
  • Refer patients to their primary care manager when indicated
  • Furnish consultation and reports as well as services specialized to meet the needs of cadets
  • Advise and consult with physical therapists, medical officers, and training division staff (when necessary) through the Head Trainer
  • Manage and direct treatments of sports injuries to include but not limited to cryocuff, moist heat packs, ultrasound, hydrotherapy, and electrical stimulation
  • Provide preventive taping and use of numerous protective orthotic devices
  • Provide evaluation, prevention, and treatment to include teaching patients progressive therapeutic exercises to restore the patient to preinjury status
  • Support concussion protocols and baseline testing for concussion protocols
  • From time to time perform administrative, storekeeping, and cleaning tasks within the work area, as necessary
  • Provide consultations to patients in a virtual format when restrictions prevent inperson interactions
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Sports Medicine from an accredited College or University, with a minimum of one year experience as an Athletic Trainer
  • A current unrestricted license to practice Athletic Trainer Services in Connecticut
  • Shall maintain current certification as required for membership in the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA)
  • Current malpractice insurance in the amount of not less than one million ($1,000, dollars per occurrence
  • Have and maintain certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) for the Health Care Provider by the American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI), or the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP)
- "No adverse information on file" with the National Practitioners Data Bank (NPDB)

  • The Athletic Trainer shall be physically capable of performing all athletic training services

POSITION TIMING:
The anticipated Start Date will be on or around June 15, 2024. All Security requirements should be completed before that time.**
