    Performing a variety of tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public facilities such as streets, water and sewer lines, drain ways and sidewalksOperates equipment including excavators, loaders, backhoes, skid-steer loader, roller, asphalt grinder, hydraulic winches, hoists, and similar equipmentLoads and hauls materials to and from job sites Installs pipe in ditch lineInstalls and repairs catch basinsCleans catch basins, manholes and sewer linesOperates bore hog, tapping machines, chain saws, and soil tampsInstalls and repairs water and sewer lines and related facilitiesPrepares utility cuts for repairsSpreads asphalt to repair potholesCleans rights-of-way on public streets and propertyCuts limbsMows grass, sprays weeds, trims shrubs and bushesInstalls and maintains erosion controlAssists with traffic control and flaggingSets up work zonesPerforms general landscaping and surface restoration at job sitesAssists with the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipmentAssists with snow removal and ice controlPerforms related tasks as required Typical QualificationsKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESGeneral knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assignedSkill in the use of equipment to which assignedAbility to understand and follow specific oral instructionsAbility to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditionsAbility to lift heavy articlesAbility to read and writeGood physical conditionAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associationsEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEHigh School diploma or GED and moderate water and sewer utility maintenance, repair and construction, asphalt repairs, and/or storm drain experience| Other Necessary RequirementsJOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTSThis is medium work requiring the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 70 pounds of forceWork requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and graspingVocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken wordHearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in soundVisual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of workThe worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatusSPECIAL REQUIREMENTSPossession of or ability to acquire a Class A commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina within six months of employmentDemonstrated safe driving historyPossession of or ability to obtain Class C Water Distribution, Wastewater Collections I certifications, Flagger, ITRE and Pesticide certification as needed within one year of employment as applicable for each DivisionThe City of Kannapolis offers a full range of benefits that includes the following:
