JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective


The Magellan International School (Colegio Internacional Magallanes), a Spanish immersion school in Austin, Texas, has an opening for an English Teacher.

This position will work with our MYP Program (6th - 10th Grades).

The English Teacher is responsible for creating a progressive learning environment where students can demonstrate thoughtful and ethical behavior and ensure that the values and principles of the International Baccalaureate (IB) learner profile are at the heart of learning and relationships in the school.


Essential Functions

  • Plan and teach English lessons following the IB curricula that differentiate for individual student needs and support students.
  • Use a wide range of technologies and creative teaching styles.
  • Contribute regularly to curriculum planning and development including interdisciplinary units of work and the development of transdisciplinary skills.
  • Plan with colleagues to deliver effective team teaching when possible.
  • Attend regular curriculum planning and student progress meetings.
  • Communicate students' progress toward realizing academic character development goals.

Essential Functions As It Relates To:
Students

  • Promotes high standards and expectations for all students for academic performance and responsibility for behavior.
  • Improves student performance.
  • Serves as a role model for students, dressing professionally, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and demonstrating pride in the education profession.
  • Ensures that the instructional programs engage the learner in tasks that require analytical and critical thinking, questions the known, fosters problem solving and creativity, and addresses the range of skills and developmental needs found in the classroom.
  • Encourages students to define individual goals.
  • Maintains a safe and creative environment for their students.
  • Plans educational field trips.
Faculty

  • Supports teachers and coworkers.
  • Attends all staff/ faculty meetings.
  • Meet with the Middle Years Programme Coordinator and the Languages Leader to review curriculum plans and activities and evaluate program's effectiveness.
Administration

  • Maintain records on each child's progress and development.
  • Keep uptodate records of attendance, curriculum and assessment tasks.
  • Carry out supervision at break times, lunch times, and other times as required.
  • Prepare documentation for IB external assessment.
Parents

  • Communicates professionally and effectively to parents about student progress.
  • Works with parent representatives in planning and implementing parent activities.
  • Conducts individual parent conferences at the end of each term.
  • Establishes a positive relationship with each student's family.
  • Provides presentations to parents as needed.
  • Attends parent meetings when required.
  • Communicates and collaborates with parents of high needs students.
Internal Community

  • Participates in Fundraising and Marketing efforts to support the growth of our nonprofit, independent school.
External Community

  • Curates local community offerings and communicates opportunities to the school community.
  • Promotes the Magellan International School Mission.
  • Creates and maintains connections with relevant community resources.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in English. Other degrees will be considered when significant and outstanding teaching experiences related to the position are evident.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
  • Experience in integrating IT with teaching.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of curriculum development and program evaluation, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment.
  • Ability to create a stimulating classroom environment.
  • Ability to utilize the local context and environment to enhance learning.
  • Ability to work with parents.
