District 08 -North Region - 643/2393 East Foothill Landscape and Spray

  • Performs manual labor, operate light equipment, and power and hand tools while performing landscaping duties such as cutting back overgrown and felled vegetation, and pruning for sight distance, sign clearance and safety of the traveling public. Operates and maintains chain saws, brush chippers, weed trimmers, hedge trimmers and hand tools such as hoes, shovels, pitchforks, hand shears, and hand saws. Perform manual and chemical weed control, landscape replanting, troubleshoot irrigation system problems and manually clean and clear drains and ditches.
  • Sets closures for shoulder work, ramps and on occasion lane closures. Picks up litter and provides support for the Adopt-AHighway program, such as inspecting their work and retrieving and disposing of filled litterbags. Works with members of the California Conservation Corps and on occasion to oversee the activities of court referral workers. Operates and maintains towable portable toilets and tool trailers. Work in twoway traffic control projects, flagging operations and be involved in twoway radio operation.
  • Keeps records such as pre and post operation reports on equipment operated; repair requests, crew/time reporting forms, and material and fuel usage forms. Performs pre and post operation checks; make minor and/or emergency repairs and adjustments to equipment; and be required to clean equipment, tools, and areas at the conclusion of work shift.

Working Conditions


Position(s) located in Fontana, San Bernardino County**
Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.
Most time will be spent in the field, operating equipment or working on foot. Weather conditions vary from a cold, windy, and wet winter to a very hot and predominately dry summer. Seasonal temperature extremes can range from below freezing to over 100 degrees on a consistent basis. Occasional heavy thunderstorms in the summer months and heavy rain is to be expected in the winter.

Incumbent will be required to operate equipment and work outside in extreme temperatures and inclement weather and may be required to sit or stand for long periods.

May work on uneven surfaces and may be exposed to noise, dust, hot materials and chemicals.

Will be required to wear long pants and appropriate footwear and must wear provided personal protective safety equipment such as shirts or vests, hard hats, safety glasses and gloves, as well as other safety devices deemed necessary.

The incumbent will be required to travel extensively through the assigned area and may be required to travel to and work in other areas in the district.
