UCSF boasts three swimming pools across two campuses; an outdoor rooftop pool voted best outdoor pool in SF, and two indoor pools, including a deep-water pool on the Parnassus Campus.

We offer a diverse array of aquatics programming including an excellent lifeguard service, American Red Cross Learn to Swim programing and certification courses, a US Masters swim team, and a water exercise program.


  • We are looking for a passionate aquatics professional to join our team as the Head Coach for UCSF Masters. This is an excellent opportunity for Head Coach who is excited to lead a large and diverse group of swimmers and Assistant Coaches. Under direct supervision of the Aquatics Manager, the Head Coach will have the opportunity to rebuild the masters program to meet the needs of UCSF faculty, staff, and students, and the greater community. The UCSF Masters Team is a registered team with US Masters Swimming. The masters program serves as both a member retention program and as a community building program for Fitness and Recreation.
  • The Head Coach will be responsible for carrying out the daytoday operations of the Aquatics unit, which includes customer service, writing workouts, and coordinating & assisting with supervision of the assistant coaches.
  • The Head Coach will be responsible for driving team membership and retaining members while working under the guidelines of Fitness & Recreation and UCSF.

Department Description

  • Campus Life Services Fitness & Recreation inspires growth and health on the UCSF campus through fitness, community, and play. The Group Fitness unit is an integral part of Fitness & Recreation and provides customer service while ensuring participants participate in Group Fitness classes in a safe environment. The Group Fitness Instructor works under direct supervision of the Assistant Fitness Manager and is responsible for carrying out the daytoday operations of the Fitness unit, which includes customer service, creating and following lesson plans and providing quality instruction to all program participants.

Required Qualifications

  • Certification to instruct in the applicable recreational sports program or equivalent experience required.
  • Nationally recognized CPR/AED & First Aid Certification
  • American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED for Infants, Youth and Adults certification (active or obtained within 3 months of hire)
  • Advanced knowledge of program activity.
  • Work leadership and interpersonal skills for those in a lead capacity, and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally.
  • Skills to develop original ideas, creative problem solving skills in a varied and challenging environment including service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decisionmaking, and critical thinking skills.
  • Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of basic computer programs relevant to job duties.
  • Knowledge of campus policies and procedures.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possession of the professional level of expertise in the activity to be conducted and demonstrated teaching ability; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent certification preferred.
  • U.S. Masters Swimming Coach Certification
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training/First Aid
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
