Position Description:


The HCSO Building Maintenance Inspector will work under the direction of the HCSO Facilities Manager to ensure the proper functioning of Harris County Sheriff's Detention Facilities.

Inspector responsibilities will include evaluating and reporting on the property condition of Harris County Sheriff's detention facilities and contracted services performance, as well as collaborating with Harris County Departments to maintain adult detention facilities.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform routine facility maintenance inspections and actively review the activities of service contractors to ensure compliance with contract terms
  • Ensure maintenance services meet state jail standards for Harris County Sheriff's Office adult detention facilities in downtown Houston
  • Inspect work performed by vendors and contractors in adult detention facilities for accuracy and quality
  • Determines and defines damages due to vandalism, misuse, or abuse
  • Prepares reports and maintains maintenancerelated records
  • Communicates with vendors, contractors, and HCSO personnel in the field as necessary
  • Closes completed work requests in Work Task Systems
  • Respond to maintenance emergencies after hours, weekends, and/or holidays
  • Performs other assignments and duties as required and necessary

Requirements:


  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  • A minimum of six (6) months experience in commercial building construction, HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems, or similar trade
  • Valid Texas Driver's License and a good driving record
  • Basic knowledge of commercial building construction, HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic competency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Skilled in the care and use of hand tools and power equipment used in maintenance facilities trades
  • Mechanical aptitude and skills
  • Gather and organize information and prepare reports to maintain accurate schedules for inspections, repairs, work tasks, and other scheduled services
  • Communicate diplomatically on a routine basis with contractors and HCSO Detention personnel, maintain courteous and helpful behavior, and ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanor at all times
  • Must be a selfstarter able to multitask and prioritize tasks to meet established deadlines
  • Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Exhibit a high level of confidentiality
  • Must be able to pass a security background check as required
  • Must have a cellular phone for use for county business

Preferences:


  • Some college courses, college or technical training certifications, or degree
  • A minimum of six (6) months experience Quality Assurance / Quality Control experience
  • A minimum of twelve (12) months experience in commercial building maintenance (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Alarm, HVAC control system)
  • Working knowledge of or ability to become quickly oriented with the Texas Commission on Jail Standards requirements

General Information:


Work Schedule:


  • 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day
  • Subject to work early morning, nights, evening, weekend, 24hour oncall, holiday, and during emergency and disaster conditions, as required
  • Emergency situations may require extended overnight stays and 24hour oncall status


Per Harris County personnel regulations compensation for time worked over the regular 40 hours per week will be assigned as compensatory time (time off) at a rate of 1.5 hours per each extra hour worked.
