THE POSITION
Under general supervision, performs general and varied grounds maintenance and gardening work.

CURRENT OPENING:
Seven 12-month/40 hours per week positions.

Salary placement will be on Range 19 of the CSEA Salary Schedule "B." Initial salary placement for new employees is customarily at step 1 ($3,972.90 per month) of this salary range.

An eligibility list will be established to fill vacancies for full-time, part-time, evening, summer, and substitute positions throughout the eligibility list.

Eligibility lists typically last for twelve months. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks.

Pursuant to PC Rule 6.2.10, the eligibility list established for this recruitment may be used for another related classification at the same or lower salary.

Essential Duties:

Mows, edges, trims, and prunes landscaped areas using a variety of power grounds equipment, such as riding mowers, power edgers, blowers, and chippers.
Prepares and fertilizes soil in order to plant lawns, trees, shrubs, hedges, and flowers.
Sprays landscaped areas with herbicides for weed control.
Hoes weeds and rakes lawns.
Loads truck with trimmings and trash.
Assists in making minor repairs to sprinklers and sprinkler systems.
Distributes sand, dirt, and wood chips.
Assists in moving and arranging bleachers, furniture, and equipment for special events.
Performs routine work in the preparation, lining, marking, and dragging of athletic fields or related areas.
Performs routine, simple maintenance on equipment such as refueling and lubricating equipment, and replacing parts as needed.

OTHER RELATED DUTIES

May assist with unskilled duties involved in erecting and repairing fences, resurfacing asphalt, mixing and pouring cement, and installing athletic and playground equipment, benches, and picnic tables.
May perform custodial work as required.
May assist with trenching for sprinkler lines.
May spray landscaped areas with insecticides for insect control.
May operate grounds equipment, including flail mowers, chain saws, and aerial lift for training purposes or while under direct and continuous observation of a qualified employee.
Performs other related duties as directed.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Custodian II maintains school buildings in a clean, orderly and secure manner, and performs routine grounds duties including watering, trimming, and hoeing.

Grounds Worker I performs general grounds maintenance and gardening work, and operates power grounds equipment and riding of mowers.

Grounds Worker II performs complex grounds maintenance and gardening work; operates all power grounds equipment, flail mowers, chain saws, and aerial lift.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees in this classification drive a District vehicle to multiple locations to work both inside and outside in changing temperatures, including temperatures below 50° and over 90°, dry atmospheric conditions, poorly ventilated areas, inadequate lighting, wet or damp areas, confined spaces, at heights using ladders or scaffolding, with electrical hazards and dangerous machinery with moving parts, noises about 85 decibels, sharp objects, fumes, moderate to high concentrations of silica or allergenic dust, lead, asbestos, gases, chemicals, odors, toxic materials, explosive substances, loud noises, vibrations, hands in water, exposure to minor contagious illnesses (cold, flu, etc.), exposure to severe contagious illnesses (tuberculosis, measles, mumps, chicken pox, hepatitis, etc.), moving vehicles, in direct contact with the public, students, and District personnel, and in the absence of direct supervision.

Experience:

No experience required.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver license.
Evidence of adequate insurance for a motor vehicle which meets or exceeds the California legal liability insurance requirement and continue to maintain insurability.
Successfully complete a preemployment physical examination.
This classification has been designated as safetysensitive in accordance with Public Law and requires a preemployment drug test as well as a continued drugfree lifestyle for continued employment in this classification.
Federal law requires that employees receive additional ACBM training if they work in areas in which asbestos building materials may be disturbed. This training is provided by the District within the first 60 days of employment.
