BASIC FUNCTION:


The coordinator is responsible for managing the day-to-day aspects of the Black Male Initiative, coordinating event and program logistics, managing data collection and reporting, overseeing strategy and outreach to students, conducting academic and career advising, and maintaining sponsor and partner contact.

Responsibilities include developing and implementing retention and support initiatives to ensure student success.


SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
Responsible for providing limited and direct supervision for student workers including graduate assistants.


NATURE AND SCOPE:
Internal contacts include senior administrators, faculty, career centers, academic advisors, other staff, and students. External contacts include representatives of sponsoring corporations, other institutions, associations, and partner organizations.


PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Confers with students to help them understand and make decisions regarding academic planning, career planning, and personal success.
  • Provide academic advising each semester to all students assigned to the Black Male Initiative program. Supports advising for all HUSB students as needed.
  • Coordinates mentoring, educational, social and developmental components of the initiative.
  • Develops partner relationships and systems to guide and monitor each program component.
  • Manages program calendar and scheduling, ensuring a cohesive and progressive experience for students in their first year at the School of Business.
  • Incorporates upperclassmen into program through a peer influence structure and ensures ongoing support and monitoring of program participants and their academic progress throughout their matriculation.
  • Guides the program's overall direction, maintaining an awareness of business and educational trends, student and sponsor needs, and HUSB operations.
  • Develops student professional development opportunities through partners, sponsors, faculty, and institutional support.
  • Maintains contact with and awareness of similar programs at other institutions of higher education to build best practices and program support.
  • Maintains accurate data for reports and informed decisionmaking.
  • Monitors data related to the program, identifying progress toward goals and objectives and implementing necessary program adjustments.
  • Develops evaluation criteria to support ongoing research regarding program impact including retention,
  • Graduation, professional placement rates, and overall academic performance levels.
  • Communicate with internal and sponsor contacts as needed.
  • Maintains an ongoing awareness of student successes and needs through regular consultation with students and related faculty, review of student performance, and observation. Is proactive in working with the Assistant Dean and students to address student needs and concerns.
  • Manages a mentoring program that ensures student participants can access peer and professional mentors.
  • Provides structured programming, expectations, and support to ensure the success of mentor relationships.
  • Monitors ongoing mentor interaction and impact.
  • Coordinates early arrival programs to help acclimate and introduce students to college and the program.
  • Develops early intervention models for students with identified needs or performance challenges. Works with the Office of Admissions to identify potential students for the program.
  • Works directly with the 21CAP Program Coordinator to integrate the program into the School of Business's existing retention and resilience initiatives and ensure cohesive and nonduplicative programming and support services for students.
  • Works directly with the Counseling Center and other campus support resources to ensure a wholeperson approach to student programming and support.
  • Provides consistent support in implementing all aspects of Special Programs, including Career Counseling courses, Freshman Orientation, and recruitment events.
  • Supports fundraising and resource development efforts to ensure program continuity and design.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to use standard computerbased programs associated with college and university academic record keeping in a Windows operating system.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with staff, faculty, students, University officials, and the general public.
  • Competence in both oral and written English to communicate in clearly and concisely.
