The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego (BGCGSD or Clubs) CHANGES LIVES through quality programs and guidance in a safe, affordable and fun environment.

BGCGSD's mission is to inspire and enable youth to achieve academic success, build good character and responsible citizenship and make healthy lifestyle choices.

We have been providing a safe, fun, and positive environment at our sites with trained and dedicated professional staff for over 75 years.

Members are involved in age-appropriate activities based upon our three priority outcomes of _Academic Success, Character Development, and Healthy Lifestyles.

_ POSITION OVERVIEW_


Under the direct supervision of the Branch Manager, the Lifeguard is primarily responsible for protecting the safety of members and participants in and around the pool area.

Responsible for planning and directing aquatic programs, maintenance of the pool and equipment, and prevents potential accidents by ensuring adherence to policy and program standards for the Clubs.


_ ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES_

  • Ensures that all activities adhere to current health and safety protocols.
  • The Lifeguard is responsible for the supervision and safety of all participants in and around the pool area; maintaining the cleanliness of the pool deck, restroom, and shower areas.
  • Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
  • Knowledge of member service standards and procedures
  • Maintain full view of the pool area above and below water surface; continually scanning the area of responsibility; perform appropriate rescues; administer First Aid and/or CPR as necessary.
  • Always set an example of appropriate dress and monitor members' swim attire, helping them understand what is appropriate in the pool area; ensure that all members understand and follow proper personal hygiene practices before and/or after swimming.
  • Assess all club members before they participate in water activities; know and understand the skill level of each member in your group; educate participants on all rules and regulations of the pool area.
  • Perform chemical tests or maintenance duties when not lifeguarding; performs related tasks as assigned.
  • Coordinates assigned program services and cooperative learning activities for youth that are both fun and instructional; displays a high level of enthusiasm and commitment for activities.
  • Effectively plan and lead programs, services, and a variety of activities for members; promotes and stimulates program participation. Provides guidance and role modeling to members.
  • Recognize and react quickly to problemsarguing, fighting, horseplay, and stop the undesirable activity quickly.
  • Cultivates positive relationships with members, their parents and/or guardians, and staff.
  • Regular and predicable attendance is expected.
  • Other duties as assigned.

_ QUALIFICATIONS_

  • Must be 18 years of age with a High School diploma or GED.
  • Must be Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid Certified; experienced Lifeguard.
  • Must have one (1) year of experience working as a lifeguard.
  • Possess skills for instruction, direction, and guidance, with the ability to lead and control groups of children in various recreational and educational activities and settings.
  • Demonstrated confidence to respond calmly and effectively to emergency situations.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with youth, parents, staff, volunteers, and community partners displaying tact, maturity, and flexibility.
  • Must have the ability to be active and on your feet for a minimum of five hours each day and complete other essential functions of the position and other duties as assigned.

_ __Special Conditions of Employment:
_**- Successful completion of pre-employment background check and drug screen.

  • Occasional weekends and evenings in support of fundraising events, committee meetings, and activities.
  • Possess, or be willing to obtain, a California Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B license certification for transporting Club members as needed.
  • CPR & First Aid Certification.
