Surgical Pathology Coordinator
This position is 20 hours/week.


Acting under the direction of the Anatomic Pathology Manager, the Surgical Pathology Coordinator will work under general supervision to perform technical and clerical functions required for core front-end laboratory operations, database and materials management for clinical and research projects, conferences, and courses.

The Surgical Pathology Coordinator is responsible for send-out tests, accurate verification of materials sent out and received.

The Surgical Pathology Coordinator will serve as the liaison between clients and NWH Anatomic Pathology and follow up on the timely receipt of slides and blocks.

Clinical Support Duties

  • This position includes a high level of responsibility for all aspects of organization and facilitation of requests for review of patient tissues slides and/or blocks. It also has a significant need for interfacing with multiple individuals and institutions.
  • Facilitates the sending of medical renal biopsies via Hot Cars.
  • Collaborate with outside pathologists, research clinicians, and patients to process all requests for NWH block/slide requests. Retrieves materials onsite and from the outside storage facility, Access Corporation. Tracks materials released to internal and external parties.
  • Maintains a good professional relationship with outside storage facility, Access Corporation, as it pertains to daily retrieval of pathology slides and paraffin blocks, and the ongoing archiving of materials. Includes maintaining the database and all activities associated with organizing, labeling, and tracking stored/requested items.
  • Orders, picks up and facilitates the handling of materials (e.g., slides, blocks, and reports) used for conferences, research projects, and clinical trials. Maintains delivery logs, shipments and consults requests.
  • Runs reports on consult materials requested for IHC Lab sent outs.
Non-Clinical Duties

  • Responsible for daily handling, filing, tracking, and retrieval of diagnostic slides to Neo Genomics and for MGH Snapshot. Must be able to verify status of all cases upon request.
  • Responsible for the daily login of cases returned with slide archive receipt.
  • Pull and give monthly QA slides to assigned pathologist.
  • Delivery of all Oncotype results to the Pathologist and uploading results to patient charts in Epic.
  • Prepare slides to be transported to offsite storage when necessary (includes recordkeeping of all material sentto offsite storage).
  • Prompt archival of consult unstained slides.
  • Keeps log of autopsy cases and facilitates calling MGH for updated reports and faxing of reports to appropriate clinicians.
  • Prepares materials for couriers, ground, and express shipping.
  • Facilitates legal cases.
  • Flags all tumor cases.
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed.

Qualifications:


  • Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associates Degree preferred
  • Experience
  • Minimum 2 years applicable experience in a healthcare or laboratory setting required.
  • Understanding and use of intermediate medical terminology required.
  • Experience
using CoPath - preferred, but not required.

  • Experience
using EPIC - preferred, but not required.

  • Job Knowledge and Skills
