    Job Description Summary
    The Penn Cytomics and Cell Sorting Shared Resource Laboratory is seeking a Specialist in Pathogenic Cell Sorting to support infectious and biohazardous research across multiple departments. ASCP cytometry certification, SCYM(ASCP)CM and a minimum of 5 years of cell sorter experience is required. The position requires extensive knowledge of and experience with Becton Dickinson cell sorters, advanced knowledge of biosafety practices and procedures, and at least 1 year of direct experience operating in an enhanced BSL2 setting. This position involves working closely with Environmental Health and Radiation Safety officials to develop and implement best practices for pathogenic cell sorting. The Specialist will also review and approve biosafety questionnaires associated with each cell sorting project. Additional duties include training qualified users for independent biohazardous cell sorting, developing and updating standard operating procedures, and participating in equipment or protocol validation. Interaction with biosafety officials at outside institutions will be common, so exceptional language and interactive skills are highly desired. Ability to train users in Mandarin is highly desired.

    Job Responsibilities

    The Specialist in Pathogenic Cell Sorting will perform hazard assessment and biohazardous cell sorting in the Penn Cytomics and Cell Sorting Shared Resource Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania. Principal duties include pathogenic cell sorting, and development and implementation of best practices for biohazardous sorting. The opportunity to contribute to new assay development and to present data at the national setting exists. The Specialist will also oversee the biohazardous materials sorting training and participate in basic sorter operation training, in English and Mandarin.

    Qualifications
    • Bachelor of Science and 5 to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

    Preferred - Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a related subject, plus at least 5 years of experience with cell sorting.. ASCP Specialist in Cytometry accreditation is required. High-level proficiency with cell sorters, flow cytometers, and enhanced biosafety procedures is required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Ability to speak multiple languages, especially Mandarin, is preferred.

    Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
