***The Air Quality Surveillance Branch (AQSB) of the Monitoring and Laboratory Division (MLD) has an opening for a highly motivated Air Pollution Specialist (APS) at our Bakersfield office. AQSB is responsible for operating and maintaining air monitoring stations throughout California that provide ambient air quality data to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) stakeholders including researchers and the public.

Incumbents may also represent CARB in various joint operations, group presentations, share technical expertise, answer inquiries, prepare project protocols and project reports, and be responsible to correspond both internally and outside CARB.

To additionally support the agency's mission and goals, the APS will work with management and manufacturers to evaluate new technologies to improve ambient monitoring capabilities to qualify/quantify the extent of pollutants in the central valley air.


  • The home office for this position will be in Bakersfield, California.
  • In addition, the employee may be required to temporarily alter his/her work schedule, to work overtime and to travel overnight to accommodate field work.
  • Duties require participation in the DMV Pull Notice Program.
  • California Driver's License required.

Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework.

The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy.

While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required.

  • Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.
  • Must be able to move/transport monitoring equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Requires repetitive movement of heavy objects.
Accessing monitoring station rooftops which may include climbing wall-mounted rung and free standing ladders.

Outdoor Tasks such as:
driving, climbing wall mounted and extension ladders to access rooftops, working at elevated heights.
