    Due to the retirement of Jo Ann Miller, the North Dakota State University Challey School of Music seeks an outstanding choral conductor and educator.

    The position is offered as a 9-month, tenure-track appointment beginning August, 2024.

    Depending on the strengths and experience of the applicant pool and the needs of the School of Music, the position may be offered as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor.


    Duties will include conducting choirs, contributing to the administration of the choral program, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in choral conducting and literature, mentoring graduate students, and active recruitment.

    If offered at the Associate Professor rank, the position may carry the responsibilities and title of Director of Choral Activities, and significant graduate student mentoring will be expected.

    Ancillary duties and teaching responsibilities will be assigned depending on strengths of the successful applicant and needs of the School of Music.


    The Challey School of Music has a long-standing tradition of training musicians in performance, conducting, composition, and liberal studies at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels.

    We specialize in the education of K-12 music teachers as well as, with our master's and doctoral degrees, the training of college and university faculty members and church music directors.

    The Voice/Choral area has five full time faculty members, part-time adjuncts, and master's and doctoral graduate students in Choral Conducting and Vocal Performance.

    Three choral faculty members conduct and supervise five choirs and the related curriculum, including music education. The Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers tour annually, with an international tour every three years.

    Annual activities include the NDSU Baroque Festival, Handel's Messiah, the NDSU Choral Festival, and the Edwin Fissinger Choral Composition Competition.

    The successful candidate will have knowledge and programming interest in both the traditional Western choral canon as well as music of diverse cultures and approaches.

    Advertised Salary:

    If offered at the Assistant Professor level, the salary will be $51,000 unless there is evidence of extraordinary experience and qualifications.

    If offered at the Associate Professor level, the salary will be $58,000-$76,000, depending on experience and qualifications.

    Minimum Qualifications:


    • Earned doctorate in conducting with a choral specialization. ABD may be considered for a one-year lecturer appointment
    • Demonstrated excellence and achievement in conducting choral ensembles in higher education
    • Demonstrated success or potential as an engaging, collegial, productive, and effective colleague in higher education
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
    Preferred Qualifications:


    • Administration of a successful college or university choral program
    • Successful experience in student recruitment and mentoring, including graduate students
    • Additional specialty areas which may include applied studio teaching and performance, music education, academic studies, music technology, and/or digital/distance pedagogy
    • Demonstrated commitment to equity and diversity
