About the job

The role

Hestia, is a globally leading research project in the area of agri-environmental science. We are

seeking a software engineer to transform our science and research into technological solutions.

Your primary role would be to help us build an API to integrate our established Python libraries for environmental-impact modelling into the digital tools that farmers use every day, such as crop management tools.

The objective of the API is to provide farmers with information to understand and reduce their environmental impacts.

As the API developer, you will work with the field team who are counducting long-term validation experiments of the API, starting with a field trial in Europe and later moving into other international locations.

These experiments will quantify the extent to which the API - connected to farm tools - actually reduces the environmental impacts of farms.

This role is for a 1-year self-employed/freelance consultancy contract initially, with the option for renewal for multiple years.

This freelance position / consultancy is full time (although applications to work part time will be considered) and is available immediately.

Responsibilities & Duties

Develop, deploy and operate microservices.

Build server-side REST APIs.

Build reliable and resilient software.

Anticipate scalability and performance issues.

Ensure code quality through tests, in accordance with good practices; Participate in code reviews.

Be a force of technical and functional proposals.

Essential skills and experience:
Expertise in (NodeJS) and writing APIs.

Experience in either MongoDB or PostgreSQL.

Experience with AWS (Lambda, SQS, Fargate, etc.).

Experience with Docker.

Desirable skills and experience:
Experience in TypeScript.

Experience with Gitlab CI-CD.

Experience with authentication mechanism like OAuth.

Experience with Python.

Experience with Elasticsearch.

Experience with Graph databases like Neo4j, OrientDB, etc.

We are based at the Oxford Martin School in the centre of Oxford, but many of our team work remotely across Europe.

Our next project will involve field trials in Europe.

Long-Term Funding:

We have been funded by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) since 2019, and are now funded by the Login5 Foundation.

Our research:
Data and methods underpinning Hestia were published in Science in 2018, and these data have been widely used by the media (e.g. the BBC, New York Times, and the Guardian), in policy documents (e.g. the IPCC's 6th Assessment Report and the UK's National Food Strategy), by NGOs (e.g. WWF and the WRI), and by Our World in Data. Our team's research has been published in Nature, PNAS, BMJ, Biological Conservation, amongst other journals.
