    Description

    Summary

    Set up and operate conventional, special-purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines and machining centers, specifically the boring mill, to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts, applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and layout techniques in the most cost-effective manner possible with the machine tools, equipment and instructions provided.

    Essential Functions

    1. Sets up and operates boring, drilling, and milling machine to perform machining operations, such as milling, drilling, boring, and reaming metal workpieces, such as machine, tool, or die parts, analyzing specifications and deciding on tooling according to the knowledge of shop mathematics, metal properties, and machining procedures.
    2. Demonstrates the knowledge and ability to set up and run all shop support equipment and at least one of the following standard shop machines; mill, lathe, grinder, and CNC machinery.
    3. Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
    4. Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines, such as mills, lathes, jig borer, shaper, and grinders.
    5. Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
    6. Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust machine controls or control media as required.
    7. Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications, using standard and precision measuring instruments.
    8. Participates in specialized training as assigned by supervisory personnel.
    9. Understands and complies with requirements of the QMS, AS9100, and/or ISO 9000.
    10. Additional duties as assigned.
    Requirements

    Required:
    1. Must have a minimum of four (4) years of experience in a non-production type machine shop or combination of technical school training plus experience or be able to demonstrate equivalent skill and ability.
    2. In-depth knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.
    3. Expertise in blueprint reading, both piece part and assembly.
    4. Proficient use of standard and precision measuring devices.
    5. Skilled in shop math, including geometric, trigonometric, and algebraic functions.
    6. Advanced knowledge of machining/manufacturing processes, assembly procedures, and mechanical functions.
    7. Ability to develop specifications from general information and draw sketches of parts or products to be fabricated.
    8. Demonstrable knowledge of design techniques, principles, tools, and instruments involved in the production and use of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
    9. Operation of forklift trucks, cranes, and other powered material handling and transport equipment.
    Preferred:
    1. Technical degree in machinist trades with CNC training preferred.
