What are Trust Fund Positions?
Trust Fund positions are unique to the Smithsonian.

They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts.

Trust employees are not part of the civil service, nor does trust fund employment lead to Federal status.

The salary ranges for trust positions are generally the same as for federal positions and in many cases trust and federal employees work side by side.

OVERVIEW:


This trust fund position is organizationally located in the External Affairs Office, National Museum of the American Latino (NMAL), Smithsonian Institution (SI).


The Smithsonian (SI) is a diverse museum and research complex dedicated to the increase and diffusion of knowledge and NMAL deepens our understanding of the United States and what it means to be American - it is SI's cornerstone for visitors to learn how Latinos have contributed and continue to contribute to U.S.

art, history, culture, and science.

The Program Coordinator provides administrative, logístical, and programmatic support to the Latino Museum Studies Program Undergraduate Internship.

With generous support from The Mellon Foundation, the Latino Museum Studies Program Undergraduate Internship provides in-person, paid opportunities to undergraduate students interested in pursuing non-curatorial museum careers in focus areas where Latinos are underrepresented, such as in museum conservation, digital culture, museum education, and exhibition design.

Interns are placed at various museums and research centers within the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art (NGA).

The internship program provides workshops and behind-the-scenes tours to help participants learn about the museum field and career options in the museum field.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Support the planning, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of the Latino Museum Studies Program - Undergraduate Internship

_Logistical Support_

  • Facilitates inperson and virtual program logistics to ensure the seamless operation of the internship program.
  • Coordinates travel, lodging, and catering for interns and guest speakers.
  • Manage scheduling and venue booking for internship curriculum workshops and seminar sessions.
  • Support clear and timely communication with mentors, interns, speakers, and program partners.

_Administrative Support_

  • Process administrative forms in support of program activities in accordance with Smithsonian policies.
  • Facilitate onboarding for participants, assisting applicants with background checks, network accounts, and badges.

_Programmatic Support_

  • Support identifying internship projects and internship mentors aligned with program focus areas and goals.
  • Support program outreach and recruitment efforts including creating engaging digital and print promotional materials, identifying academic programs for outreach, and identifying opportunities to strengthen the program's outreach activities.
  • Support with designing the program seminar component in support of internship learning outcomes.
  • Assist with alumni outreach and engagement to support program outcomes and the mission of the Latino Museum.

_Evaluation and Record Keeping_

  • Support program evaluation and learning.
  • Recommend improvements to program structure or administrative processes.
  • Maintain organized program records and assist with program reports.
  • Document program activities through photo and video.
Foster an inclusive environment for program participants


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


  • Knowledge of U.S. Latino history, art, and culture.
  • Knowledge of the operation of museums, cultural centers, and educational institutions and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles in these fields.
