Residency requirement:
Must live either in Danville or within 45 miles of Danville city limits.
Job Function:
Under the supervision of the Director of Operations, the Library Assistant helps create a welcoming and safe atmosphere for customers of all ages and assists them at a public service desk.
The primary shift for this position will be 10:30-7:00pm Monday-Thursday and 8:00am-4:30pm on Saturday.Functions (including but not limited to):
This position will staff a Public Service Desk at least 75% of the time. This position will primarily be located on the first floor, but may be called to any desk depending on staffing and patrons in the building
Your role at a Public Service desk may include in the following functions:
- Acknowledging every patron as they enter and leave your assigned area
- Charges and discharges materials on Polaris system
- Issues library cards
- Answers telephone
- Solve customer concerns
- Assists adults in the use of public computers and other electronic devices
- Provides assistance in the use of the Internet, the online catalog, and databases to which the library subscribes.
- Troubleshoots problems with software and educational games on the public computers.
- Assist and advise customers with their use of library materials, including books, movies, music, media, and electronic resources
- Monitor and address customer behavior to ensure a safe and welcoming environment
Your role as security may include the following functions:
- Monitors buildings for unauthorized and suspicious activities; reports security and hazardous conditions to Library management
- Communicates local law enforcement emergency events identified through local broadcasts and alerts, notifications and inperson reports
- Intercedes with patrons who fail to comply with the law and/or Library rules and policies
- Explains rules and policies to patrons
- Enforce correction of infractions through verbal warning; deescalates sensitive situations
- Works with local law enforcement, and/or emergency medical services as needed
- Prepares incident/accident reports
- Staff on security incidents and issues
- Assists with the development of security, operations, and emergency policies and procedures
- Identifies conditions that are hazardous to the safety of the staff and the public and takes actions to mitigate those hazards.
- Coordinates removal of hazardous materials and substances
- Provides guidance on proper opening and closing procedures
- May serve as the point person in emergency or disaster situations; may act as a liaison concerning safety and security issues between library locations and neighboring businesses; may act as a liaison between the library and contract security personnel
Performs other related duties as assigned in support of the Mission and Vision of the Library
Requirements:
- Exceptional customer service skills and commitment to public service
- Ability to work with library customers and staff in a consistently friendly and efficient manner
- Physical ability to lift library materials weighing up to 50 pounds and to push fully loaded carts of library materials
- Knowledge of security and safety policies, procedures and programs
- Ability to learn and perform routine library functions and procedures
- Excellent computer and technology skills, including use of the Internet, computers, mobile devices, and social media
- Ability to communicate policy to library customers
- Flexibility to adapt to changing situations and to vary work schedule
- Ability to maintain reliable attendance and regular schedule
- Satisfactory criminal background check
- Weekend and evening shifts required
Acceptable Experience and Training:
- Bachelor's degree or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
- Customer service experience will be preferred
- One year of experience in maintaining, supporting, and/or working in safety/security perferred
Compensation:
Hourly support staff position; starts at $17.00 an hour, depends on work experience and education level; 37.5 hours/week.
