Job Summary
This position is for a pharmacy technician in an outpatient specialty pharmacy setting.

A Pharmacy Technician is responsible for assisting the Pharmacist with filling orders received by the pharmacy but may be asked to specialize in one of many areas as it pertains to workflow, cross training will be provided for other areas.

This setting requires a high level of care for patients with complex disease states.

The applicant must possess strong customer service skills along with the ability to multitask and must be able to adapt quickly to change.

Most of the pharmacy's patient interaction is done over the phone, the ability to clearly communicate on the telephone is required.

Technician should be motivated, able to work independently, and self-directed to complete required tasks and be willing to go above and beyond for the patient.


Education and Experience

  • H.S Diploma/GED Equivalent
  • Current, active pharmacy technician license in pharmacy jurisdiction
  • Prefer experience in one of the following settings:1 or more years of experience in a specialty pharmacy; or 1 or more years of experience in retail or mail order pharmacy
  • Current knowledge of all applicable state and federal pharmacy laws, rules and regulations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to learn quickly and retain information in a complex setting
  • Strong customer service skills to build trust among patients and other providers and provide quality care
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to provide relevant information to patients and other healthcare providers
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities to maximize efficiency of workflow
  • Ability to effectively troubleshoot issues and provide resolution for barriers in the workflow, or to the patient's care

Primary Job Duties
The Pharmacy Technician should be able to perform all duties consistent within the scope of a specialty pharmacy setting including, but not limited to:

  • Assists the Pharmacist in reviewing, processing, preparing, filling, labeling and packaging of medications, supplies and the provision of pharmaceutical care, answering questions and requests, responding to and referring inquiries to the Pharmacist
  • Cleans equipment, and maintains all required temperature logs as per policy and procedures
  • While completing fulfillment functions, checks medication and administration supply inventory for outofdate products, removes products from inventory and works with the appropriate resource to record outofdate products that must be returned to the manufacturer
  • Attend to walk in customers regarding their prescription request(s)
  • Enter and process new prescriptions into the pharmacy computer system as well as new patient profiles, where permitted by pharmacy regulation and only at the direction of the supervising pharmacist after their review of the prescription in accordance with the Company policy and procedure
  • Verify information on prescriptions received prior to processing (correct prescribing MD, name of patient, patient information, medication, dose, quantity, number of refills)
  • Select drugs from stock for preparation; count, pours, or mixes pharmaceuticals
  • Places pharmaceutical products in appropriate containers and affixes labels to container
  • Dispense filled prescription to customer and offer counseling by a pharmacist.
  • File prescriptions according to their schedule class
  • Prepare and maintain patient profile with notation for pharmacist's review
  • Perform clerical accounting duties related to billing and eligibility
  • Process prescription refills to include: refill confirmation when appropriate, review pending refills with the supervising pharmacist, generate refill documentation and process third party claims adjudication
  • Decipher, understand adjudication claim rejections and resolve pertaining issues
  • Familiar with third party payers and payment systems
  • Communicate as necessary with patients to determine general health status, medication compliance, drug and supply inventory, and overall coordination of care and service (custom assessment in software system) as applicable
  • Maintaining a safe and clean pharmacy environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations
  • Assist in coordination of patient assessment
  • Complete all necessary paperwork, forms, and records according to policy and procedures
  • Prepare prescription for home delivery as necessary
  • Account for delivery receipts from driver for all delivered prescriptions.
  • Answer telephone and take messages for patient refill request and related pharmacy business
  • Assists with putting away newly received inventory in the appropriate location in the pharmacy
  • Assists with full inventory and cycle counts
