General Summary of Position
In a Washington Hospital Center (WHC) retail environment, sells merchandise and assists customers in making their selections. Maintains the sales area in an appealing/orderly manner.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Completes sales at the cash register: takes cash, checks, or charges; makes change; completes charge slips; and/or verifies information on checks to complete the transaction(s). Ensures adequate change in the cash register; obtains additional change from WHC main cashier office as necessary.
  • Obtains preliminary information necessary to process any order. Ensures that the correct individual picks up order(s). Notifies supervisor of orders not picked up within the specified time.
  • Assists customers answering questions concerning the availability of an item and/or about the item itself. Shows items in sales cases. Boxes and/or wraps items as requested.
  • Straightens, cleans, and restocks sales area. Prices items in accordance with price list(s). Reorders or informs supervisor of items that need to be reordered. Pulls dated items or items not selling or out of season for return to vendor.
  • Receives, inspects, and prices newly received merchandise as directed by management. Uses newly received items to stock sales area and create merchandise displays as needed or places items in stock room.
  • May open or close the shop. May set up cash register with proper amounts of change and bills. May count money/charges/receipts at the end of the day or shift and take money/deposit to the cashier's office, calling Protective Services for an escort.
  • Performs a visual check of inventory. May enter inventory count into a portable, hand held computer and submit it to supervisor for entry into the department's automated inventory system.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • May require up to l year of technical or other specialized training.

Experience

  • 0 to 6 months experience in a retail environment required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires the ability to read and write; and knowledge of grammar, and arithmetic including fractions and decimals.
