Job Summary:


The Train Starter (Blue Line) will monitor ongoing operations including, but not limited to, assuring that transportation services are provided according to the schedule and implement corrective action when unanticipated delays or emergencies prevent adherence to schedule.


Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Assure that appropriate headways are maintained and overall performance standards are achieved.
  • Supervise the operations of the RTL service to ensure compliance with the proper procedure(s).
  • Supervise the performance of transportation personnel and documenting violation(s) with respect to compliance with safety, traffic and operating rules. Familiarity with the MBTA's Safety Plan as well as the position's outlined responsibilities.
  • Assign staff and adjust runs as indicated by monitoring current performance.
  • Maintain and monitor payroll and performance records.
  • Enforce the Authority's Drug and Alcohol Policy.
  • Authorize overtime work within the budget limits and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Perform the duties of the District Supervisor during late evening or weekend shifts during his/her absence to ensure sufficient staffing for respective areas of operations.
  • Cooperate with Dispatchers in making schedule and routine decisions and implement corrective action in all emergency situations.
  • Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor or coworker in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Work any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed.
  • Respond or report to work as directed by supervisory personnel for emergencies, extreme weather conditions, or any other abnormal conditions that impair service or the safety of service, twentyfour (24) hours per day, seven (7) days a week.
  • Uphold the rights and interests of the Authority while building and maintaining an effective relationship with employees.
  • Perform related duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications:


  • High School diploma or equivalent from an accredited Institution with the ability to comprehend, communicate and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. in English.
  • Three (3) years experience in RTL Operations.
  • Current fulltime transportation employee whose rating station is the Blue Line and holds a current rating as a performed Motor Person, Yard Motor Person, Inspector, or Chief Inspector.
  • The ability to pass: background check screenings, a Criminal Offended Record Information (CORI) check, and the MBTA's medical requirements, including a physical examination and drug and alcohol screen.
  • Have excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills.
  • The ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous and professional experience.
  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twentyfour (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the saf
