OverviewThe Vermont Office of the Attorney General, Agency of Human Services Legal Division, has an immediate opening for two (2) energetic and talented full-time Assistant Attorney Generals who will be responsible for providing defense litigation services for the Vermont Department of Corrections (DOC).
DescriptionLocated in Waterbury, Vermont the DOC Litigation Unit staff attorney is responsible for defending the DOC, DOC employees and the State of Vermont in civil actions, habeas corpus petitions, small claims actions, and administrative actions in Vermont state civil courts, federal courts, and occasionally state criminal courts. The attorney will conduct all aspects of litigation including discovery, motion practice, trial practice, and appeals to the Vermont Supreme Court. DOC attorneys also provide legal advice on other various DOC issues including sentence computation, contracts, grants, and various interstate and regional compact agreements. The attorney will also be responsible for providing legal advice and support to the Vermont Parole process.
CompensationThis Assistant Attorney General position is an exempt full-time position. Salary and benefits will be based upon qualifications and experience in accordance with the State of Vermont Attorney Pay Plan. The State of Vermont offers a benefit package rivaling any employer in Vermont, which includes a top-notch health care plan, generous sick and annual leave, and employer contribution to pension plans. Further, the Attorney General's Office recognizes the importance of a healthy work-life balance and support the use of flexible workplace arrangements in accordance with applicable policies.
Minimum RequirementsCandidates must be a member in good standing of the Vermont bar, or eligible to waive in.
Candidates must be willing to travel and work independently, but within the structure of a government legal team.
Experience in administrative, juvenile, family, civil and/or criminal matters is preferred.
Preference will be given to applicants with relevant litigation experience, especially in Vermont courts, but newly admitted attorneys are welcome to apply as this opportunity provides an opportunity to gain valuable litigation experience and develop or hone trial advocacy skills in the State and Federal Court systems.
Self-reliance, minimal IT skills and knowledge of state and federal public assistance and social welfare regulations and policies are a plus.
Candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills and be capable of working as part of a team.
