Position Description

General Transportation Tech I


Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations.

Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.


General Transportation Tech II


Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations.

Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.


General Transportation Tech III


Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees.

Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.


Essential Duties:


General Transportation Tech I

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Maintains highways and rightsofway; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Mows rightsofway and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
  • Operates light equipment such as a frontend loaderone and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech II

  • Includes all essential duties listed for General Transportation Tech I, as well as:_
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a frontend loaderone and a half cubic yard or more, tractortrailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
  • Inspects routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
