This position is 100% full-time and in-person at the City Council office in 250 Broadway, New York, NY with some nights and weekends.

Some attendance in the district office in Queens will be requested from time to time.


RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee the Office's communication strategy

  • Create and execute plan to maximize the number of positive press hits the Elected Official receives around district activities and engagements, legislative wins and priorities, budget wins and priorities, and other matters
  • Write or edit all remarks and testimonies for the Elected Official
  • Monitor local, state, and national stories which align with, or impact, the Elected Official's priorities and create appropriate responses
  • Monitor activities of agencies where the Elected Official may Chair or be a member of oversight committees so she can have appropriate engagement or responses
  • Curate newsletters twice a year for the Elected Official
Manage media engagement

  • Pitch stories, Op-Eds, and interviews for the Elected Official to both print and television media
  • Build relationships with reporters, anchors, and other media members
  • Be a point of contact between the office and the media
  • Mitigate any issues which may arise (i.e., crisis communications)
  • Ensure all items needed for press conferences are present (podium, microphone, remarks/talking points, other speakers, media outlets, etc.)
Manage the Elected Official's social media page and website

  • Monitor constituent inquiries that come via social media, flag them for appropriate staff, and share intake forms to inquirer
  • Ensure all commemorative months, weeks, days have a social media post related to them
  • Increase the Elected Official's engagement with constituents on social media (i.e., facebook live Q&A, twitter or IG live, etc.)
  • Increase social media following
  • Ensure Elected Official's website is user friendly, has appropriate information and links, has staff contact information, etc.
Develop and support the legislative and policy agenda of the Council Member

  • Tracking legislation introduced by the City Council and monitoring its progress as it moves through the legislative process;
  • Working with agencies and interest groups in reviewing and preparing legislation;
  • Working with agencies in crafting a response to City Council legislation and oversight hearings and preparing testimony;
  • Preparing written analyses of legislation and upcoming hearings; and
  • Assisting in overseeing and supervising interns assigned to support the legislative and budget process
Represents the Elected Official at meetings, events, other functions

  • Provide office updates at meetings and functions you attend
  • Distribute literature, gear, other office items/materials
  • Share top line notes with management, and office staff, at meetings attended
Performs such other functions under the directive of the Chief of Staff or Elected Official

  • Update management on progress of duties assigned
  • Clearly communicate difficulties and successes of tasks and duties assigned
  • Work in a collaborative and cohesive manner
  • Be proactive about issues which need to be solved

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Willingness to work on nights and weekends as needed to represent the Council Member at community events
  • Bachelor's Degree in Policy Research, Public Administration, Communications, Marketing, Political Science or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of communications, policy analysis, legislative affairs, social media management, graphic design, press relations, and/or marketing experience required
  • Knowledge of New York City government operations preferred
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills, with an ability to become familiar with companyspecific programs and software
  • Strong organizational, project management and problemsolving skills with impeccable multitasking abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Applicants must be comfortable with extensive public speaking and evening meetings

PREFERENCE

  • Should speak a second language like Spanish, Creole or Bengali
  • Should have a valid New York State Driver's License and regular access to a motor vehicle

Pay:
$60, $70,000.00 per year
