About Civics Unplugged

Civics Unplugged (CU) is a non-profit that empowers high school leaders with the training, funding, and community they need to become civic innovators.

We do this through educational programs for youth seeking to become social entrepreneurs, supporting graduates as they launch projects and begin careers, and creating new initiatives that push the boundaries of civic education for youth.

Through social entrepreneurship, our Fellows drive positive change in our climate, democracy, digital lives, and more.

Since we launched Civics Unplugged in January of 2020, over 4,000 Fellows, ages 14-19, have graduated from the program.

Of our Fellows, 70% identify as People of Color, 74% identify as young women, and 40% will be the first in their families to go to college.

Our cohorts are global, representing all 50 U.S. States and over 74 countries.

After the program, fellows enter the Civics Unplugged community, where they can access funding, mentorship, and support for initiatives. To date we've invested $700,000 directly to Fellowship graduates and their projects.

In just two years since launching the program, CU fellows have:

been appointed to boards of education in the US, been elected to public office, given official TED Talks, earned a weekly column in the Washington Post, won global awards and scholarships, been invited to White House Briefings, and even launched fellowships of their own.

All told, Civics Unplugged fellows
- all under the age of 2- have raised millions in external funding, and reached over 4,100,000 people in 30 different countries through programs and content initiatives.

Community Associate Role

As demand for Civics Unplugged's programs increase, we are seeking a Community Associate to join our community team, which engages and supports fellows once they've graduated from our fellowship.

The community team maintains and moderates online platforms for community members, manages our microgrants programs, and hosts in-person and virtual events to engage fellows long after they've graduated from our programs.

We are a small, decentralized team building in a fast paced environment. Civics Unplugged's work style is unlike most non-profits, and focuses more on experimentation and user-focused design. The Community Associate will report to the Director of Community and be responsible for the following.

The Community Associate will be responsible for:

  • Serving as the lead manager of Civics Unplugged's online community platforms, including a private community platform powered by Graduway, a community Slack workspace, and a private LinkedIn group
  • Designing graphics and invitations to promote CU Community events and programming, using Canva, Partiful, and Paperless Post
  • Conducting outreach to community members and supporters for inperson and virtual events, as well as other community opportunities such as internships and funding
  • Helping to manage logistics and materials for inperson community events
  • Maintaining and updating fellow records in a CRM database
  • Collaborating with and supporting members of the CU community who are leading CUrelated projects (CU magazine club, virtual meetups, etc.)
  • Generating innovative ideas for programming and events to bring together members of the community and further fellows' learning experiences and growth as civic innovators

Other Responsibilities

  • Support the planning and execution of inperson community events
  • Work with the Director of Community to identify and cultivate partnerships with partner organization
