Costa Fruit & Produce - The Fresh Ideas Company


Responsibility Summary:


The SQF Practitioner is responsible for leading, developing, managing and executing all food safety and quality systems by implementation of SQF food safety program for Costa and Fresh Ideas respectively.

This includes working with the suppliers, customers, management and the work force.

Sr. Vice-President


Direct Reports:
QA Technologist (Fresh Ideas Division)


Back-up: Warehouse Manager and Director of Operations, VP Fresh Ideas, QA Technologist


Primary job duties (functions) may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Implement and contribute towards continuous improvement of company-wide SQF program.
  • Maintain and ensure the quality and integrity of raw materials, packaging materials and finished goods through receiving, production, storage, rotation, processing, and shipping and distribution.
  • Maintain and review food safety fundamentals as per the HACCP plan for Costa and Fresh Ideas.
  • Oversee the food safety team at Fresh Ideas involved with CCP monitoring and food safety and food quality testing.
  • Communicate information essential to ensure the effective implementation and maintenance of the SQF program to the management.
  • Implement and maintain an effective internal GMP audit program for Costa and Fresh Ideas by closing out corrective actions.
  • Oversee and provide companywide training for management, office staff, warehouse employees and production staff.
  • Handle customer complaint investigations & customer response procedures.
  • Facilitate third party audits and regulatory agencies inspections.
  • Coordinate and participate in mock recalls.
  • Oversee the management of finished product and raw ingredient specifications along with
the maintenance of physicals standards binders.

  • Manage the activities of the Costa QA Team. (Repackaging)
  • Plan and execute lab testing for finished products, shelflife testing and environmental monitoring. Monitor lab results and environmental monitoring findings.
  • Participate in new product development projects and nutritional label review.
  • Manage the development of all employees for progress and growth.
  • Maintain and review company's FSMA plan.
  • Continually apprise Senior Management of all related issues affecting food safety and food quality.

Knowledge of:


  • Continuous improvement initiatives and knowledge of quality tools.
  • Auditing experience and familiarity with SQF, regulatory audits, customer audits
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Food Safety (HACCP principals, cGMPs, SOPs and SSOPs, Pest Control, Allergen Control & Recall programs)

Minimum Qualifications:


  • BS degree in Food Safety, Microbiology, Chemistry, Food Science, or other related field OR 5+ years of progressive food processing/quality assurance experience, with at least 3 years in a management/supervision capacity within a manufacturing environment under HACCP, USDA and/or FDA.
  • Experience working with quality systems including SQF is required. SQF Practitioner certification is a plus
  • Experience working directly with customers and suppliers.
  • American Society for Quality certification, such as current CQE or CQM status, is a plus.
HACCP Certified from a national/international recognized and accredited HACCP training firm.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in advanced quality statistics, measurement system analysis and continuous improvement.

  • Bilingual (Spanish-English) a HUGE plus
  • Ensure collaborative relationships with industry, trade, other associations.
  • Proficiency in: MS Office Suite, AFS a plus

Performance Standards:

  • 100% accuracy and attention to detail to ensure product is received correctly in accordance with Costa Fruit & Produce Company Warehouse Standards.
  • Shall comply with all applicable SQF policies and procedures.

Physical Requirements:


  • Long periods of standing and walking on hard, concrete surfaces.
  • Exposure to cold temperatures (ambient temperature).
  • Exposure to dust, fumes, and wet conditions.
  • Occasional lifting, up to 50Lbs to identify and inspect product.
