Summary:


The Anesthesia Technician III under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or physician performs a variety of routine direct and indirect patient care activities and technical skills in the anesthesia setting within the established policies and procedures of the Department.

The Anesthesia Technician III is also expected to perform other similar and related duties as assigned. Management has the right to change and/or add to the job responsibilities at any time.

In addition to the essential function of an Anesthesia Technician, the Level III technician must meet all requirements of Level I, II, & III competency.

Additional duties may include but are not limited to the following.


Responsibilities:


1) Provides age-appropriate care to patients.

Demonstrates knowledge of developmental stages for the following age groups and applies developmental theories and concepts when planning and implementing care for patients:
Adults, Adolescents, Children, Infants and Toddlers, and Neonates.


2) Knows and follows proper procedures concerning anesthesia supplies and equipment. Initiates preliminary review and troubleshooting resolutions of problem equipment. Repairs faulty equipment, or if unable to repair, removes faulty equipment from area, labels it appropriately, and reports to Clinical Engineering. Ensures that supplies are stored according to manufacturers' and/or the hospital's recommendations. Follows policies/procedures relative to Body Substance Precautions. Reports break-in sterile technique promptly to physician or RN.


3) Participates in precepting/mentoring of anesthesia technicians I & II, and their educational activities. Teachers needed skills in assigned areas following the established guidelines and procedures for the department. Documents on the departmental "New Employee Orientation Checklist" all the skills learned by the new employee. Reviews the progress of new employees with the manager on a weekly basis, and any problems or concerns. Actively participates in educational opportunities from the ASATT.


4) Maintains appropriate PAR levels of designated supplies. Demonstrates responsible and cost-conscious use of supplies and resources, and is continually looking for ways to reduce expenditures for each anesthetizing area. Routinely orders stock. Communicates and document the need for outside supply orders to the appropriate people. Works with the anesthesiologists on ways to reduce the waste of supplies that are routinely used.


5) Coordinates and assigns appropriate personnel to each anesthetizing location for each shift. Coordinates work/staffing assignments in accordance with the daily needs of each anesthetizing area, as indicated by OR schedules and the Anesthesia floor manager. Ensures that the remote site areas are prepared and set up in a timely manner. Communicates problems outside of his/her scope of responsibility, and/or unusual situations, to the manager and/or Anesthesia floor manager. Communicates and coordinates any operational and/or change in procedure to all shifts, either verbally or through a written notification in department books. Resolves any staffing problems within each shift.


6) Maintains a positive attitude and work practices consistent with team goals and positive service relationships. Displays a positive/professional attitude on a consistent basis. Consistently displays a positive team approach when dealing with peers/colleagues/patient population. Possesses the ability to adjust to sudden change/emergent situations, able to use critical thinking skills to obtain the necessary supplies and equipment. Shows independent initiative in completing work assignments. Contributes to the goals/mission of the unit on a consistent basis.


7) Accountable and demonstrates proficiency in 100% of all required knowledge and skills inherent to the department, Level I, Level II, and Level III skills.


8) ASATT Certification and/or ten (10) years of Anesthesia Technician Experience in a hospital setting. Is responsible for maintaining continuing education.


9) Demonstrates leadership skills and the ability to perform shift clinical supervisor duties as assigned by the manager.


10) Able to make minor repairs on all anesthesia equipment in the absence of Clinical Engineering and give equipment status reports to Clinical Engineering.


11) Independently provides anesthesia room set-up, turnover, and technical support for all types of cases, including OB, Centennial, Chestnut Surgery Center, IVF, Cardiac, Trauma, Remote Site, Endoscopy, Cancer Center, and Difficult Airway.


12) Prepares, sets up, and assists the physician with the Ultrasound machine.


13) Maintains OR anesthesia supplies and equipment, including ordering and restocking.
