Description

RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE AT ANY TIME.Chemist receives supervision from the Wastewater Environmental Supervisor or designee. This class may provide lead direction to laboratory staff; this class does not exercise supervision. The Chemist is an advanced-level technical class.
Incumbents perform and/or oversee the performance of complex chemical analyses of environmental samples using sophisticated laboratory instruments including, but not limited to, Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP/MS).
Assigned duties are performed with considerable independence with results achieved through precision and accuracy, and proficiency in the performance of analyses.
Ideal candidates will demonstrate strength in customer service, oral and written communication skills, organization, and applying judgment related to assigned work.
Other duties include, but not limited to, recording test data and keeping records, performing complex calculations, and training other laboratory personnel in the more complex chemical tests and analyses.
One vacancy exists in the Wastewater Management Division in the Public Utilities Department.Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period for up to a maximum of two years at the City's discretion.
If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.Pay,Benefits, & Work Schedule

Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP)
DROP is an optional, voluntary program that allows you to have your retirement benefits deposited in a special savings account within your Retirement System all while you continue to work for the City of Fresno.
The Requirements
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.
Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biochemistry, biology or closely relate field; and one (1) year of experience in the inorganic chemical analysis of environmental samples including sample preservation and preparation and the use of Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry and other complex laboratory instruments for the testing of inorganic heavy metals on water, groundwater, wastewater, soils, sludge or bio-solids.

Additional Requirements
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required at time of appointment and must be maintained for the entire term of employment in this class.
The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno.

Selection Process
The examination process may consist of the following:
Application review - Qualifying Only: Applications which meet the minimum qualifications will be reviewed and a limited number of the most qualified candidates will be invited to the Oral Examination.
Selection of the most qualified candidates will be based upon those applications demonstrating the greatest breadth and depth of applicable education, experience, skills and training.
Therefore, applicants are urged to submit sufficiently detailed information in their application materials for evaluation.
Oral Exam: 100%: A panel of subject matter experts will conduct a job-related oral examination to evaluate a candidate's knowledge of: care, maintenance, and operational requirements of laboratory instruments for the analysis of environmental samples; laboratory practices and Quality Assurance/Quality Control procedures; basic math principals; oral and written communication skills; and or other topics related to a candidates, training, experience, and qualifications for the position of Chemist.

Veteran Preference Regulations
Candidates applying for veteran's preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period.
Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit proof of honorable service for every examination for which veteran's preference credit is requested.
