    Description

    GENERAL FUNCTION


    The Journeyman Plumber performs skilled technical work in the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of domestic water systems, heating water systems, sanitary sewer systems, storm sewers, gas pipe (both threaded and fusion welded), steam and condensate pipes, and fire protection systems in all University structures and grounds following recognized procedures and techniques of the plumbing trade.

    The Journeyman Plumber maintains the heating, water, gas and plumbing systems using hand and power tools such as sewer auger or vacuum plunger, acetylene torch, soldering and welding equipment, sewer camera, pipe locator, and related plumbing tools.

    The Journeyman Plumber also practices preventive maintenance of plumbing tools and equipment, and complies with federal regulations governing environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials common to the plumbing trade.

    The Journeyman Plumber monitors and reports maintenance issues needing attention to the appropriate authority.

    Description of Primary Duties

    8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

    Monday – Friday

    Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

    Education:
    A high school diploma or the equivalent is required. Completion of a plumbing vocational/technical school or a recognized apprenticeship program in the plumbing trade is preferred.

    Experience:
    At least six years successful experience in the plumbing trade is required. Documented journeyman status is required. A working knowledge of building and plumbing codes is required.

    Skills:

    Requires general mechanical ability which includes skills in the use of electrical test equipment, small hand and power tools, mechanical equipment and materials applicable to the plumbing trade.

    The ability to interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, and schematics is required. The ability to locate underground piping and document piping location on blueprints is required. Computer literacy is required.

    The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.


    Effort:

    Must be able to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis; prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching on a daily basis.

    Requires a full range of physical motion in order to operate manual and electrically-powered tools and plumbing equipment.

    Must be able to move throughout campus, including climbing stairs in all University buildings, in order to perform plumbing work.

    Work is performed indoors and out-of-doors, occasionally in environments that are dusty, noisy, or which could have work hazards.

    Some positions in this job classification (job title) are designated as essential employees who must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather; the supervisor will communicate whether the particular position is considered essential and under what situations.


    License:
    A Journeyman plumber's license is preferred.

    Other:
    A valid Missouri driver=s license is required. A valid backflow preventer license is preferred.

    Scope of the position requires exposure to and use of chemicals, solvents, and cleaners common to plumbing work that may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed.
