Job Summary


Under general supervision of the Assistant Athletic Director, Student-Athlete Advising, provide in-depth, wide-ranging and complex academic counseling to an assigned caseload of student-athletes enrolled in 70-74 majors across four undergraduate colleges.

Collaborate with the Assistant Athletic Director, Student-Athlete Advising in the planning and development of policies and procedures to optimize the delivery of academic counseling and academic support.

Provide interpretations of Academic Senate and campus policies and NCAA Division I academic eligibility rules to student-athletes, coaches, and parents.

Establish strategic on
- and off-campus partnerships with faculty and staff to create and administer innovative programs that support the academic development, career development, personal development, community connections, retention, and persistence to degree of student-athletes. Evaluate, select participants, and administer at-risk academic mentoring program based on comprehensive academic history review of student-athletes from 25 teams. Represent the Academic Services unit, Intercollegiate Athletics, and UC Davis at academic recruiting events and respond on behalf of the unit to inquiries and concerns from parents, prospective student-athletes, coaches, college counselors at other institutions, and the general public. Evaluate transfer coursework from community colleges and four-year institutions per NCAA Division I academic progress rules. Independently exercise substantial delegated authority within broad policy and procedure parameters established by the Director of Academic Services, Intercollegiate Athletics, the Academic Senate, the Deans of the four undergraduate colleges, and the NCAA.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Maneuver and lift boxes weighing up to 25 lbs. Sit at desk and computer for several hours at a time.
  • Stoop and retrieve physical files from shelves at floor level and above.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (ecigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.
  • Work occasional varied lunch hours, evenings/nights, overtime, and/or weekends and holidays on short notice. Restricted vacation during peak periods.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:


Minimum Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Demonstrated experience in counseling & advising skills, including skills to plan and structure content and process of individual academic counseling appointments based on student academic history and needs.
  • Experience in Problemsolving skills to identify and document patterns of student academic needs and to develop strategies and programs to successfully meet those needs as well as skills to respect and maintain professional boundaries with studentathletes.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

  • Familiarity with current NCAA Division I academic eligibility regulations and procedures related to initial eligibility of freshmen and transfers as well as NCAA progress toward degree rules for continuing students as well as the ability to learn complex NCAA Division I regulations quickly and accurately and educate studentathletes about rules and rule changes.
  • Familiarity with current NCAA Division I rule related to athletic aid, amateurism, recruiting, ethical conduct, playing and practice seasons, and extra benefits.
  • Skills to make initial assessment for appropriate campus or community referrals that enhance studentathlete success.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills to express complex ideas and concepts clearly, concisely, and logically.
  • Skills to multitask and effectively manage daily work responsibilities including projects with overlapping deadlines and urgency. Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.

Preferred:


Preferred Education/Experience

  • Master's degree or higher from an accredited institution in counseling psychology, student personnel, education, sport psychology, sport management, or related field.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

  • Knowledge and appreciation of issues faced by NCAA Division I studentathletes at the campus, conference, and national level.
  • Knowledge of UC Davis policies and procedures, including policies related to orientation, registration, transfer, readmission, summer school, and financial aid.
  • Ability to articulate the role of intercollegiate athletics within higher education and the unique transferable skills
