Duties:


Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Works with the Veteran to realize the Veteran's housing goals and reassesses and revises goals as indicated by the Veteran's engagement in the housing search process.
  • Works with the Veteran to complete preparations for obtaining the Housing Choice Voucher.
  • Works with Veterans to identify housing priorities and strategize the housing search.
  • Negotiates with landlords and property managers to help Veteran be accepted for housing.
  • Provides leads on possibly available units.
  • Helps Veterans develop realistic expectations about the housing search process based on their individual history and needs.
  • Educates Veterans on the roles and responsibilities of the Veteran and HUD VASH staff throughout participation in HUD-VASH.
  • Coordinates with other service providers and treatment team members to meet Veteran psychosocial needs.
  • Organizes and conducts individual case management interventions, to include early interventions and supportive followup to ensure stability and progress in the housing search in communitybased visits and facilitybased contacts.
  • Serves as a member of a multidisciplinary HUD-VASH admissions and housing placement team.
  • Develops partnerships with community agencies, especially those serving homeless Veterans, with regular contact and communication.
  • Provides liaison services with other programs working with homeless Veterans to ensure continuity of care and promote successful transition of Veterans from one program to another.
  • Provides appropriate clinical documentation for all contacts with or about Veterans.

Basic Requirements:

Loss of Licensure or Certification. Once licensed or certified, social workers must maintain a full, valid, and unrestricted independent license or certification to remain qualified for employment. Loss of licensure or certification will result in removal from the GS-0185 social worker series and may result in termination of employment.

Social Worker, GS-9

Experience, Education, and Licensure. None beyond the basic requirements.
(a) Ability to work with Veterans and family members from various socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, educational, and other diversified backgrounds utilizing counseling skills.
- (b) Ability to assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of Veterans and their family members, and to formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the Veterans problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills, and assistance needed.
- (c) Ability to implement treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups to achieve treatment goals. This requires judgment and skill in utilizing supportive, problem solving, or crisis intervention techniques.
- (d) Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate with clients, staff, and representatives of community agencies.
- (e) Fundamental knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures. This includes acute, chronic, and traumatic illnesses/injuries; common medications and their effects/side effects; and medical terminology.
